Zelensky says Russia set fire to nuclear plant in southern Ukraine to ‘blackmail’ the world

A nuclear power plant in Russia-controlled southern Ukraine was seen on fire and clouded in smoke on Sunday, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of setting the blaze to “blackmail” his country and the world.

“We have recorded from Nikopol that the Russian occupiers have started a fire on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant,” Zelensky wrote on X. Nikopol is across the Dnipro River from the power plant.

The Ukrainian president assured his followers that the radiation levels at the power plant are “within norm” but that as long as Russia controls it, the situation is “not and cannot be normal.”

“Since the first day of its seizure, Russia has been using the Zaporizhzhia NPP only to blackmail [International Atomic Energy Agency] to react. Russia must be held accountable for this. Only Ukrainian control over the Zaporizhzhia NPP can guarantee a return to normalcy and complete safety.”

The head of the Ukrainian-controlled military administration in the Nikopol district, Yevhen Yevtushenko, said he had unofficial information that Russia started the fire by setting car tires ablaze in the cooling towers.

He called it “a provocation, or an attempt to create panic” and clarified that the plant is “operating as normal as possible under the conditions of occupation,” per CNN.

Russia, on the other hand, accused Ukraine of the fire on the plant’s territory.

Yevgeniy Balitsky, the Russian-appointed official in control of occupied parts of Zaporizhzhia, said the fire was “a result of shelling of the city of Enerhodar by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.” He also maintained there was no radiation threat to the nuclear plant or the city of Enerhodar.

The IAEA said its experts “witnessed strong dark smoke” coming from the plant’s northern side following “multiple explosions heard in the evening.”

“Team was told by ZNPP of an alleged drone attack today on one of the cooling towers located at the site. No impact has been reported for nuclear safety,” the organization added.

Ukraine has been fighting to defend its land since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. However, the war has reached a new stage, as Zelensky confirmed on Saturday that Ukrainian forces moved into Russia as part of a surprise counteroffensive.

Ilhan Omar braces for primary rematch after watching two ‘Squad’ allies fall

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is two days away from learning whether she has won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, essentially ensuring her path to reelection.

Her challenger, a familiar foe in former Minneapolis Councilman Don Samuels, believes he can unseat the sitting Democrat, arguing while campaigning on Sunday that she has been “divisive.”

The New Atlantis

“The voters have had three terms under Congresswoman Omar’s leadership and service,” Samuels said to FOX 9. “They are dissatisfied.”

“She goes hard after one point of view, condemns the other point of view, alienates half of her district, and becomes divisive,” he added.

Omar pushed back on his comments the same day, contending Samuels supports similar policy positions to her, something to which he himself agreed.

“He’s now adopted all of my policies because he knows those are winning policies,” she told the outlet. “I hope we actually hear what he might want to do, instead of just taking my full platform and running with it.”

“Anyone who knows me and Don knows who the divisive one is,” Omar added.

It appears there is little love lost between the two Democrats. Omar narrowly won reelection against Samuels in 2022, securing the Democratic nomination by just roughly 2,500 votes. And because a Republican has not represented the district since the 1960s, the primary election is treated as the real determinant for who will represent the seat.

The stakes are even higher given how other Democratic primaries have gone so far this cycle. Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cori Bush (D-MO) have already been unseated, largely due to the massive contributions from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobbying group, to their opponents.

Omar, like Bowman and Bush, has been critical of Israel during its military conflict in Gaza. Yet pro-Israel groups have been largely absent from the Minnesota Democrat’s reelection race, and Omar has significantly outspent Samuels.

Biden will meet with national security team as Middle East tensions mount

President Joe Biden will meet with his national security team on Monday to discuss developments in the Middle East as Israel and Iran inch closer to escalating attacks.

Vice President Kamala Harris will also attend the meeting in the Situation Room. Biden is expected to speak with King Abdullah II of Jordan earlier in the day.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a Cabinet meeting on Sunday that his country is already in a “multi-front” war with Iran and its proxies. To Israel’s north lies Lebanon, where a senior Hezbollah commander was killed last week. To the south is Gaza, where Israel has conducted nearly ten months of war against Hamas. And much further east is Iran, where Hamas’s top political leader was killed just hours after the Hezbollah leader’s death.

The killings, coming shortly after a rocket strike on Israel-controlled Golan Heights killed 12 children, have ignited already extremely tense relations in the Middle East. Iran’s top leadership, following the assassination of Hamas’s Ismail Haniyeh, vowed “harsh revenge,” while Israel has said it is prepared to defend itself against any retaliatory strike.

The U.S., for its part, has sought to get messages to Tehran asking them not to escalate the conflict in fear of a wider war. It has asked Israel to de-escalate as well.

Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, is hoping for the same. “We want the escalation to end,” Safadi said. He is in Iran for the first official visit of a senior Jordanian official to the country in over two decades.

Biden’s meeting on Monday comes after his handling of the war in Gaza helped crater his support among the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. How the U.S. responds to the developments in the Middle East is also likely to play a part in November’s election.

Former House Republican endorses Harris and slams Trump’s ‘thirst for revenge’

Former Republican Virginia Rep. Denver Riggleman has endorsed Kamala Harris for president and targeted Donald Trump in his announcement.

“I was heartbroken and horrified to see how close we came to losing our democracy on January 6, because of one man — Donald Trump,” Riggleman wrote in a statement released by the Harris campaign. “I’ve seen with my own eyes how Trump’s thirst for power, revenge, and retribution is his real motivation, and that’s why I cannot stand by while he tries to destroy our country.”

Riggleman’s support for the presumed Democratic nominee was announced as part of the Harris campaign’s Republicans for Harris rollout, which it described as a “campaign within a campaign.”

“I’m on here. Yep,” Riggleman wrote in response to his name being included on the list. “I’ve seen the data from J6. Trump & his minions are dangerous. The same folks who pushed J6 push Project 2025. A 2nd Trump term would endanger US citizens— and create global chaos. Sanity should be the baseline. Criminals should be discounted.”

Riggleman represented Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, a largely rural district in the center of the state, from 2019 to 2021. He was endorsed by Trump twice but unseated in 2021 by Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), who recently lost a primary for his own bid for reelection after a recount to state Sen. John McGuire.

Justice Gorsuch warns Biden to ‘be careful’ with Supreme Court reform plans thumbnail

Justice Gorsuch warns Biden to ‘be careful’ with Supreme Court reform plans

Justice Neil Gorsuch had a firm response to Joe Biden’s proposals to reform the Supreme Court, telling the president to “be careful” with his plans.

Gorsuch was asked by Shannon Bream of Fox News Sunday about Biden’s stated suggestions. “You’re not going to be surprised that I’m not going to get into what is now a political issue during a presidential election year. I don’t think that would be helpful,” the justice said at first.

He then emphasized the importance of an independent judiciary, saying it “means that when you’re unpopular, you can get a fair hearing under the law and under the Constitution.”

(AP Photo/Rod Lamkey, Jr.)

In defending the Supreme Court in its current state, the justice added that they are there “for the moments when the spotlight’s on you, when the government’s coming after you, and don’t you want a ferociously independent judge and a jury of your peers to make those decisions?”

“And so I just say, be careful,” he concluded.

Biden laid out his Supreme Court reform agenda last Monday with a “bold” three-part proposal: A “No One Is Above the Law” constitutional amendment to state a former president does not have immunity for crimes carried out in office; term limits for Supreme Court justices; and a “binding” code of conduct for the high court. Vice President and presumptive 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris endorsed the plan.

While many Democrats have accused the Supreme Court and its conservative justices, particularly Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, of undermining democracy by being partisan, Republicans have countered by arguing that Democrats only seek change because they are in the minority. Republicans have a 6-3 majority on the high court. Thomas and Alito have denied having any bias.

In defending the Supreme Court in its current state, the justice added that they are there “for the moments when the spotlight’s on you, when the government’s coming after you, and don’t you want a ferociously independent judge and a jury of your peers to make those decisions?”

“And so I just say, be careful,” he concluded.

Vance says ‘childless cat ladies’ comment taken out of context and blown up by Democrats

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) said his controversial comments about “childless cat ladies” were “taken out of context” and blown “out of proportion” by Democrats because that is “what they always do.”

The running mate of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has sought to defend his 2021 comments after they sparked backlash last week. Vance was referring to Vice President Kamala Harris and other top Democrats on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show at the time when he said there were “childless cat ladies” running the United States who “want to make the rest of the country miserable too.”

The Ohio Republican, speaking with Fox News’s Trey Gowdy on Sunday night, attempted to clarify his remarks, alleging Democrats such as Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, have become “anti-child and anti-family.”

“If you look at the full context of what I said, it’s very clear the Democrats have tried to take this thing out of context and blow it out of proportion, which is what they always do, Trey, because they don’t have an agenda to run on themselves,” Vance said. He then attempted to contrast Republicans with Democrats while saying it’s important for the country to be “pro-family.”

“Of course, for a whole host of reasons, it’s not going to work out for some people,” the senator said of people without children. “We should pray for those people and, of course, have sympathy for them. I still think that means we should be pro-family, generally speaking, as a party, and I think that our country has become particularly hard for parents, especially under the policies of Kamala Harris.”

The Harris campaign responded by suggesting Trump and Vance want to be too intrusive into citizens’ lives. “Every time JD opens his mouth is a reminder that a Trump-Vance administration would be focused on inserting themselves into every American’s living room, bedroom, and doctor’s office,” Harris for President spokesman Ammar Moussa wrote.

“It would just be weird if it wasn’t so dangerous — and it’s why the stakes this November are so incredibly high,” he added.

Vance made a similar defense on Friday when speaking with SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly Show when he said the “cat ladies” remark was a “sarcastic comment” but the “substance” of what he said was “true,” again accusing the Left of being “anti-family.”

Harris has two step-children, with their father being second gentleman Douglas Emhoff. Vance has three children with his wife, Usha.

Biden calls in to Harris campaign meeting as president avoids cameras for another day

President Joe Biden called in to Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign meeting in Wilmington, Delaware, speaking for the first time in days but still not showing his face.

The president had not been heard from since last Wednesday when he tested positive for COVID-19, forcing him to cancel an event. Now, on Monday, as Harris gathered her election team to outline their path to victory, Biden called in to wish her well and explain his decision to suspend his reelection bid.

“Julie, if I didn’t have COVID, I’d be standing there with you,” Biden told his campaign manager who is now working for Harris, Julie Chavez Rodríguez. “I want to say hello to Kamala if she can hear me. I know she’s going to be speaking shortly. I want to say to the team: Embrace her. She’s the best.”

“I know yesterday’s news was surprising and it’s hard for you to hear, but it was the right thing to do. … I think we made the right decision,” the president added.

Biden’s words from the telephone are unlikely to cool speculation as to where he is, especially as a growing number of Republicans have said that if he doesn’t believe he can run for reelection, he shouldn’t remain in the White House. The president has asserted he will finish his term.

Even as Biden passed the torch to Harris, he did so without a national address, instead writing a letter and circulating it on the internet. His allies have said his absence from the public eye has been because of his COVID-19 diagnosis.

The president’s doctor said on Monday that Biden is still continuing his duties and that the public will be informed of any changes in his recovery process. Still, some GOP lawmakers, such as Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), want to see “proof of life.”

Biden has been said to be recovering at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Dr. Kevin C. O’Connor said on Sunday his “symptoms have improved significantly” and he is on the road to recovery.

Kamala Harris shores up support as potential rivals show their cards thumbnail

Kamala Harris shores up support as potential rivals show their cards

Fresh off President Joe Biden’s endorsement to be his successor, Vice President Kamala Harris is working to shore up critical support in her bid to be the 47th president of the United States.

Harris has moved quickly to lock up the backing of critical power brokers in the Democratic Party, according to multiple reports that suggest she has eyed Capitol Hill leaders first. Perhaps most important of all, however, has been Harris’s support from governors who were, as recently as Saturday, rumored to be challengers for the Oval Office.

Govs. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), Gavin Newsom (D-CA), Jared Polis (D-CO), and Roy Cooper (D-NC) have all endorsed Harris in the wake of Biden’s historic withdrawal. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), long considered a future presidential candidate, also said she would not challenge Harris for the nomination.

SIX PEOPLE KAMALA HARRIS COULD CHOOSE AS HER RUNNING MATE

There are still challenges to Harris’s quest to consolidate control. She has not received an endorsement from three of the most powerful congressional Democrats: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), although Schumer did speak with Harris on Sunday, a source familiar told the Washington Examiner.

Nor did former President Barack Obama issue an endorsement, instead appearing content to let a “process” play out to give Democrats the best chance of defeating Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in November.

Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV) is considering a run for the Democratic nomination, the Washington Examiner learned, which could deliver a centrist challenge to Harris at an inopportune time. And conservatives have threatened legal action to challenge Biden’s withdrawal from the ticket. It remains unclear how serious such threats could be to Harris given that she was Biden’s running mate all along.

However, by all accounts, Harris’s goal to “earn and win” the nomination appears to be off to a strong start. All 50 Democratic Party state chairs have backed her, according to Reuters. Harris has also reportedly secured the support of three key congressional coalitions: Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-CA) of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and Rep. Ann McLane Kuster (D-NH) of the New Democrat Coalition.

At least 60 current and former Democratic National Committee members also circulated a letter on Sunday urging delegates to throw their weight behind the vice president. Other rising Democratic stars such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have also endorsed Harris.

And while Biden faced fundraising concerns in the final days of his campaign, Harris is being greeted by the opposite. Progressive donation platform ActBlue announced it had raised over $46 million in the first 5 hours of her campaign.

Harris and her allies will still surely seek the endorsements of other party leaders, such as Schumer, Obama, and DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison. But if Biden hoped for the party to quickly coalesce around Harris after his announcement, he would likely be pleased with the initial results.

The Democratic National Convention will begin in less than a month and take place from Aug. 19-22. It will be there that the party’s official nominee will be chosen, and whether it is Harris or someone else, intrigue will skyrocket about who their vice presidential pick will be. Shapiro’s and Cooper’s names have been floated, among many others.

The frenetic presidential campaign cycle reached a fever pitch on Sunday when Biden announced he would not continue his campaign for reelection. He does intend, however, to finish out his term.

SIX PEOPLE KAMALA HARRIS COULD CHOOSE AS HER RUNNING MATE There are still challenges to Harris’s quest to consolidate control. (AP Photo/Chuck Burton) However, by all accounts, Harris’s goal to “earn and win” the nomination appears to be off to a strong start. Hunter Biden asks ‘all Americans’ to thank his father after president’s historic withdrawal

Hunter Biden released an emotional statement on Sunday following his father’s decision to withdraw from his campaign for reelection.

The first son marveled at his father’s attributes and asked “all Americans” to “thank” President Joe Biden for his public service.

“For my entire life, I’ve looked at my dad in awe. How could he suffer so much heartache and yet give so much of whatever remained of his heart to others?” Hunter wrote. “Over a life time I have witnessed him absorb the pain of countless everyday Americans who he’s given his personal phone number to, because he wanted them to call him when they were hurting. When their last hopes were slipping through their hands.”

HERE’S WHO COULD REPLACE BIDEN AS DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE

“That unconditional love has been his North Star as a President, and as a parent. He is unique in public life today, in that there is no distance between Joe Biden the man and Joe Biden the public servant of the last 54 years,” the president’s son added. “I’m so lucky every night I get to tell him I love him, and to thank him.  I ask all Americans to join me tonight in doing the same. Thank you, Mr. President.  I love you, Dad.”

After intense public scrutiny and questions surrounding his campaign’s viability, Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would no longer be seeking a second term in the White House. Shortly after, he endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, to take his place.

Hunter emerged as one of the closest confidantes of his father amid the recent controversy over Biden’s mental acuity. Several reports stated the first son was acting as a close adviser of Joe Biden in recent weeks as the president dealt with increasing calls to let someone else lead the Democratic Party into the future.

Harris may face challengers in her bid to “earn and win” the Democratic nomination. The Democratic National Convention will take place in Chicago from Aug. 19-22.

DNC members urge delegates to vote Kamala Harris at convention thumbnail

DNC members urge delegates to vote Kamala Harris at convention

Members of the Democratic National Committee are imploring delegates to the DNC’s August convention to get behind Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s new presidential nominee.

President Joe Biden endorsed Harris for president on Sunday shortly after announcing he was withdrawing his reelection candidacy. Soon after, DNC members began circulating a letter asking delegates to all get on the same page.

“We believe our strongest candidate for President, who can best offer a clear, unifying vision for the future of the United States, is Vice President Kamala Harris,” the letter states. It was signed by at least 60 current and former DNC members.

HARRIS PRESUMED FAVORITE TO REPLACE BIDEN, BUT OTHER NAMES WAIT IN THE WINGS

The letter touts the Biden-Harris administration’s accomplishments and notes the vice president is the “only person that can credibly claim the torch” of those successes and carry on Biden’s legacy, which they lauded.

The DNC members also sought to contrast Harris with Trump, using her background as a prosecutor and his recent brushes with the law, which the former president has decried as politically motivated.

“As a former prosecutor, there is no one better to make the case for American democracy and against convicted felon Donald Trump than Kamala Harris,” the letter states, before pointing to a major reason a lot of congressional Democrats wanted Biden to withdraw from the top of the ticket: down ballot races.

“We also firmly believe that Vice President Harris and her Vice Presidential selection will help Democratic candidates for U.S. House, Senate, and in the states we need to win in November, enabling us to enact laws that truly benefit the American people,” the Democrats wrote.

In order for Harris to be named as a nominee at next month’s convention, a petition must be submitted with signatures from at least 300 delegates (no more than 50 of which can be from one state) with the candidate’s consent, FrontloadingHQ political scientist Joshua Putnam told the Washington Examiner.

“The inherent advantage the vice president has is that President Biden endorsed her today,” Putnam added. “Joe Biden won 98.7 percent of the pledged delegates during primary season and while he cannot transfer them directly to her, the method in which those nearly 4000 delegates were chosen means that they are highly likely to take the president’s endorsement into consideration.”

The selection process would include a “review process” to allow the campaign to vet the delegate candidates who are pledged to their presidential candidate, essentially meaning the delegates who were loyal to Biden are likely to follow his lead.

“She will also have a money advantage,” Putnam continued. “Biden can transfer the money they have raised for the reelection effort over to Harris more easily under campaign finance law than would be the case if anyone else was newly at the top of the ticket.”

While many Democratic heavyweights, such as Bill and Hillary Clinton, Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) immediately endorsed Harris, others, such as former President Barack Obama, did not, instead emphasizing a “process” that will come next.

DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison also made no mention of Harris in his first comments on Biden’s Sunday decision. “In short order, the American people will hear from the Democratic Party on next steps and the path forward for the nomination process,” he said.
