Chris Coons cries as he praises Biden’s ‘brave’ decision to bow out of 2024 race

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) praised President Joe Biden’s “brave” decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, appearing very emotional as he spoke.

Coons, the co-chairman of the Biden-Harris campaign, made his statement while praising Vice President Kamala Harris, describing her as the best candidate to continue Biden’s work. The president himself has endorsed Harris as his replacement candidate, which was given shortly after he announced he was bowing out of the 2024 race.

“I admire, I respect, I love Joe Biden,” Coons said on CBS News. “I have worked my heart out for him on this campaign, and while this was a very hard decision, I deeply respect how it is a continuation of his lifetime of putting our country before himself. Joe Biden is the toughest fighter I’ve ever met.”

“Every time he’s been knocked down, he’s always got up again, and the challenge of seeing this moment and of recognizing what was in the best interest of the nation was a significant challenge. I still believe he could have beaten Donald Trump, but I also know that what he has done today is in the best interest of our nation,” he added.

Coons continued by stating that former President Donald Trump poses a “unique threat” against the United States. He also contended that the focus now should be on the fall 2024 campaign and preserving Biden’s presidential legacy that he claims Trump could end.

Later in the interview, Coons stopped speaking as he appeared visibly upset. He ended up continuing by adding that Biden’s “very difficult decision” to not seek reelection reflects his character.

Coons had been one of Biden’s most vocal supporters since the first presidential debate, which saw many people issue calls for the president to drop out of the 2024 race. After George Clooney called for Biden to bow out, Coons joked that he was “more of a Matt Damon guy.”

Van Jones compares Biden dropping out to grandfather having keys taken away

CNN’s Van Jones was visibly upset while appearing on television Sunday, saying that people are “heartbroken” over President Joe Biden’s decision to not continue his reelection bid.

Biden revealed his decision through a statement he made on social media, and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris shortly afterward. Jones argued that Biden’s decision represents the difference “between a politician and a leader” with his “selfless” decision.

“It‘s kind of like when your grandpa, you got to take the keys and everybody ‘you got to take his keys, you got to take his keys, and he‘s fighting and he‘s fighting,’ and everybody’s so frustrated,” Jones said on CNN. “And then you finally get the keys back, and then you just cry because this is somebody that you love. This is somebody that you care about, this is somebody who was there for, this is somebody, you wouldn‘t be here without him, and you have to take something from him.”

Jones added that this is “a human moment” for both Biden and his family, and that it marks a sad day for people who wanted the president to get “across the finish line.” He contended that Biden’s decision represents his decision to put the country first.

“Wait till we get to the convention, you‘re going to see people crying, standing, screaming, cheering,” Jones said. “He may not get a chance to talk for 10 minutes. We finally get a chance to put our arms around this guy. He did the right thing for this country, the right thing for this party.”

Elizabeth Warren says Harris is ‘ready to step up’ in Biden’s place

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) stated that Vice President Kamala Harris is “ready to step up” as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee if necessary, citing the “big decision” President Joe Biden needs to make about continuing his candidacy.

Warren had been asked about a video Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) released on Friday, in which she claimed that people who want Biden removed as the 2024 nominee do not want Harris to take his place. In response, Warren insisted that Biden is the nominee for the party, but that Harris would be able to “step up” in the event he chooses to step down.

“Remember, 80 million people voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020 knowing that Kamala Harris would be ready to step up if needed,” Warren said on The Weekend on MSNBC. “I’ve known Kamala for nearly 15 years now, back when I was setting up the consumer financial protection bureau and Kamala was attorney general of California. We worked side by side to try to fight back against giant banks that were cheating people. Kamala has led the charge in order to fight back against the Republicans that want a nationwide abortion ban.”

Warren also referenced how Harris was once a prosecutor, noting how she would be a good pick to run against “a convicted felon,” referring to former President Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nominee.

“No matter what happens, I will be out there fighting for Democrats,” Warren said. “I believe we’re going to come together, and we’re going to win in November.”

Warren’s suggestion that Harris is ready to step in for Biden comes after several people have formed a new group called “United for Harris.” The group is made up of people who worked for the 2016 presidential campaigns of former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and has been compared to the “Ready for Hillary” group.

“We just want to put it out there that there are folks who are wanting to rally around the vice president, should Joe Biden step aside,” said Matt Ortega, who worked as digital director for communications on Clinton’s campaign. “The idea is to give some people out there who want Harris to be at the top of the ticket a focal point.”

Discussions about potentially replacing Biden have skyrocketed after the first presidential debate last month, which many argued was a weak performance by the president against Trump. Biden has insisted in several post-debate interviews that it was simply “a bad night” and that he intends to stay in the race.

Twisters director says film doesn’t mention climate change because it’s not ‘preaching a message’ thumbnail

Twisters director says film doesn’t mention climate change because it’s not ‘preaching a message’

The director of Twisters argued movies are not meant to be “message-oriented” when addressing the lack of climate change in his new film.

The movie, releasing in theaters Friday, features scientists seeking to survive against deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma. Lee Isaac Chung, the film’s director, contended that his film does not “shy away from saying that things are changing” but sought to ensure the film is not “putting forward any message.”

“I wanted to make sure that we are never creating a feeling that we’re preaching a message because that’s certainly not what I think cinema should be about,” Chung said in an interview with CNN. “I think it should be a reflection of the world.”

Chung added that part of the film’s purpose is to showcase the “awe and wonder” of tornadoes, referring to a childhood experience had himself. His run-in with a tornado happened while he was raised on an Arkansas farm, and he said it left “a very big imprint” on him.

“That sense of awe and wonder was something that I really wanted to preserve in this film, that it’s not just a summer blockbuster about running from tornadoes and hiding away,” Chung said. “I wanted to make sure that we’re also revering and honoring the beauty of that power.”

The movie serves as a stand-alone sequel to 1996’s Twister, which grossed almost $500 million at the global box office. Among the 2024 film’s lead cast is Glen Powell, best known for his supporting role in Top Gun: Maverick as Jake “Hangman” Seresin.

Chung’s omission of climate change in Twisters comes after John Musker, a veteran director for the Walt Disney Company, suggested Disney focus on its stories and characters before prioritizing a film’s message. He contended that Disney does not need to avoid messaging altogether but should undergo “a course correction” in its film production.

Harris calls for ‘unity’ and says she prayed for Trump after assassination attempt thumbnail

Harris calls for ‘unity’ and says she prayed for Trump after assassination attempt

Vice President Kamala Harris revealed she prayed for former President Donald Trump following his assassination attempt, adding that she has met with former first lady Melania Trump since then.

Harris made her comments during a campaign stop in Michigan on Wednesday, during which she condemned political violence. The vice president also mourned the death of Corey Comperatore, who was killed at the rally shooting while protecting his family.

“My husband, Doug, and I are thankful he was not seriously injured,” Harris said. “That day, as soon as we saw what was happening, we said a prayer for his well-being, and our thoughts immediately turned to Melania, who we have met, and their family. The bottom line is no one should have to fear for the safety of a loved one because they serve in public office.”

Harris then referenced how President Joe Biden called for unity and contended that there needs to be unity in condemning political violence. She added that people need to engage in “a robust debate” of the issues facing voters this November.

At the end of her speech, Harris contended that one of the issues at stake in this election is abortion, adding that this is why she was visiting Michigan.

Harris’s visit to Michigan comes shortly after Donald Trump selected Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate in the 2024 election, with Harris sending Vance a congratulatory message. Harris also stated she hopes the two will get to meet at a debate soon

The vice president has been seen as a viable replacement for Biden should he choose to drop out of the 2020 race. Jen Psaki, the former Biden White House press secretary, called Harris the “clear alternative” should a replacement for Biden ever be necessary.

Trump’s proposed tariffs would let US ‘fight back’ against China: Youngkin thumbnail

Trump’s proposed tariffs would let US ‘fight back’ against China: Youngkin

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) argued that former President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs would help the United States on the global stage, allowing the country to be competitive against others such as China.

Trump’s proposal would impose a 10% across-the-board fee on all products imported into the U.S., which he has argued would help protect jobs. Youngkin, an ally of Trump, contended that free trade in the global economy does not exist and that the U.S. gives “unfettered access” to its market while other countries do not reciprocate this access to the country.

“And let’s be clear, U.S. companies do not have access on an unfettered basis to the Chinese market, and yet they expect to have unfettered access to the U.S. market, and so we’ve got to stand up strong for the United States,” Youngkin said on Bloomberg Surveillance.

Youngkin also warned that China is trying to “dominate the world” at the U.S.’s expense and is using “economic imperialism” to do so. He added that the Eastern country is doing everything it can to infiltrate and influence the U.S. economy.

“What that has translated to is a real recognition that we need to not only protect ourselves against China but we need to fight back, and so the tariffs that President Trump imposed on China when he struck the first Chinese deal were critical in order to rebalance an unbalanced situation with China,” Youngkin said.

The Virginia governor was also asked about the possibility of serving in a second Trump administration, as the former president has indicated interest in recruiting him. Youngkin said he has two goals in mind: helping Trump win the election and continuing his role as governor.

Winning Virginia has been a growing discussion among the Republican Party Youngkin said the typically blue state is “in play” for Trump this November. The Trump campaign announced plans last month to open more campaign offices in the state.

Trump’s pitch for tariffs is very much in line with Sen. J.D. Vance’s (R-OH) plans for trade. Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, has supported boosting the country’s manufacturing sector by using tariffs and has pushed back on the premise that tariffs are inherently inflationary.

Youngkin condemns assassination attempt of Trump as ‘an affront against our liberty’

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) issued a statement condemning the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, calling for the nation to pray for both the victims of the shooting and the nation as a whole.

The Virginia governor applauded Trump for showing “strength and courage” while surviving his assassination attempt and argued that the shooting marks a test for the country. He argued that “American exceptionalism” is earned, not granted, and that the United States must condemn this attempt to kill the former president.

“With one voice, we must prove that we are worthy of the generations that fought, that died, that sacrificed so much to build this great country,” Youngkin’s statement read. “Yesterday’s attempted assassination of President Trump was an action of pure evil – an affront against our morality, an affront against our liberty, an affront against the very foundations of our great nation. If we ever deem it acceptable, then we will lose our Republic.”

Youngkin went on to state that the way to fix the division within the country is by “defending our beliefs with dignity and fortitude.” He added that people need to acknowledge that “God Almighty blessed this chosen land” and defend it “against all enemies foreign and domestic.”

The governor is set to be one of several Republican state leaders speaking at this week’s Republican National Convention, where Trump is expected to become the party’s 2024 presidential nominee. Other governors speaking at the convention include Govs. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Kristi Noem (R-SD), Doug Burgum (R-ND), Greg Abbott (R-TX), and Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR).

Youngkin campaigned with Trump in the state of Virginia two weeks ago when the president held a campaign rally in Chesapeake. The visit was made amid speculation that Trump could select Youngkin as his vice presidential candidate, which the former president is set to announce any day now.

Trump’s campaign announced last month that it was opening more campaign offices in the state of Virginia as polling data has indicated it could flip the state red. Should Trump succeed in doing so, it would mark the first time the state went red since 2004, when then-President George W. Bush was running for reelection against then-presidential candidate John Kerry.

Kid Rock, Jeff Bezos and world leaders voice support for Trump after assassination attempt

More people have condemned the violence former President Donald Trump faced on Saturday after surviving an assassination attempt, expressing their relief that he is OK.

Musician Kid Rock, a known supporter of the former president, posted a video on X warning his followers, “You f*** with Trump, you f*** with me.” The musician has also shared a GoFundMe fundraiser on his social media, which has raised over $1.9 million to support the victims of the shooting.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has expressed his sorrow for the victims, and has also expressed his gratitude for Trump’s safety, writing on X that the former president showed “tremendous grace and courage under literal fire.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also issued his own statement regarding Trump’s failed assassination, calling the attempt at Trump’s life both “an attack on America” and “an attack on democracy.”

“On behalf of myself, my family, the government and people of Israel, we wish President Trump a speedy recovery, continued good health, and continued strength,” Netanyahu said in a video posted to X.

“Biden tells us to trust the bureaucracy to investigate the assassin’s motive. But the feds categorized the crazed, leftist congressional baseball shooter as “suicide by cop” — even though the shooter had a well-documented left-wing political bent and made sure that the players on the field were Republicans before attacking,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on X. “And there does need to be an investigation regarding the security protocols used in Butler. The answer to the following question must be provided in short order: how did someone, armed with a rifle, get on top of a roof 150 yards away from the stage? DC bureaucratic failures almost never result in any accountability; this time needs be to be different. Our country is in the peril its in partly because the DC ruling class has consistently evaded responsibility for its failures,”

“I am appalled to learn about the shooting of former U.S. President Donald Trump at his rally in Pennsylvania. Such violence has no justification and no place anywhere in the world. Never should violence prevail. I am relieved to learn that Donald Trump is now safe and wish him a speedy recovery. My condolences go out to the close ones of this attack’s victim, a rally attendee. I extend my wishes for strength to everyone who is horrified by this event. I wish America emerges stronger from this,” Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote.

“I’m sickened by the shooting at former President Trump. It cannot be overstated — political violence is never acceptable. My thoughts are with former President Trump, those at the event, and all Americans,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted on X.

Salena Zito reflects on ‘super excited’ atmosphere at Trump rally before shooting

The Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito reflected on the excitement present during former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania, which was cut short due to a shooting that injured him.

The shooting left Trump injured in his right ear, prompting Secret Service agents to quickly escort him to his motorcade, though not before the former president raised his fist to the crowd to signal he was OK.

Zito, who was attending the rally and was set to interview Trump afterward, noted how everyone was “very excited” to see the presumptive presidential nominee for the Republican Party, despite spending hours in the hot weather.

“It was hard to find someone not dressed in some sort of patriotic-themed shirt on, and there was this sort of festival feel about it,” Zito said. “Like if you were going to a Jimmy Buffett concert, and everyone’s just part of something bigger than themselves, so they’re happy. And he had one of his largest rallies ever in this same county in October, the last day of October, in 2020, and this is a county that Trump won by 65%, and so there was a lot of excitement. Even if you drove up to the event, people were standing outside, they were on their porches, they were waving flags, there was a real celebratory feeling about the event.”

The shooting occurred when a “pop-pop-pop” sound was heard and Trump fell to the ground, prompting Secret Service agents to quickly surround him, Zito explained. When three more shots were heard, she and the event photographers took cover, with someone from Trump’s campaign then laying on top of them to protect them.

Zito wrote in her own eyewitness account that there were “probably at least 30,000 people” attending the rally. She was also able to see Trump bleeding from his ear after the shooting.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that he knew “immediately” something was afoul when he heard “a whizzing sound,” which then led to him feeling a bullet “ripping through” his skin. He offered his condolences to the family of the spectator who was killed in the shooting, as well as to the family of another spectator who authorities said was critically injured.

Countless lawmakers have shared their gratitude that Trump was not seriously injured by the shooting, and President Joe Biden has issued his own statement, condemning political violence as “sick.”

A photo capturing the historic events of the shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania showed one of the bullets in the frame, just barely missing Trump’s head.

The photo, taken by New York Times photographer Doug Mills, showed a gray line just above Trump’s left shoulder. Another photo taken by Mills right after showed Trump checking his right ear, and a third one showed blood on his hand after taking it away from his ear.

Trump wrote on Truth Social following the shooting that a bullet had “pierced the upper part of my right ear.” He added that he heard a “whizzing sound,” and that he felt the bullet “ripping through the skin.”

“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump’s statement reads. “Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country.”

Ivanka Trump, the former president’s daughter, gave her thanks to the Secret Service agents for their quick reaction to the shooting and expressed thanks to those who expressed their concern for her father. She added that she continues “to pray for our country.”

“I love you Dad, today and always,” Ivanka Trump wrote on X.

The Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito, who attended the rally, wrote that Trump had been speaking for about six minutes before the sound of gunshots rang out. The Secret Service then got around Trump to protect him and, shortly after, escorted him to his motorcade for transportation to a hospital.

President Joe Biden condemned political violence as “sick” in the wake of the shooting, stressing the need to unite as a country. The Biden campaign also announced Saturday that it is “pausing all outbound communications and working to pull down our television ads as quickly as possible.”
