AOC calls Kamala Harris running mate ‘a uniter’ with ‘many assets’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was encouraged by Vice President Kamala Harris‘s choice of running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), in the 2024 presidential election, praising his unifying presence.

“Vice President Harris is picking a uniter for not just the Democratic Party but for the entire United States,” Ocasio-Cortez said on CBS Mornings.

The vice president announced Walz as her running mate Tuesday morning, and the pair quickly began campaigning together at rallies, starting in Philadelphia on Tuesday night before traveling to swing states the rest of the week.

Ocasio-Cortez responded Wednesday to reports that Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) was passed over due to antisemitism in the party, rejecting the notion and saying that the Democratic Party has Jewish leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and second gentlemen Doug Emhoff, Harris’s husband.

The New York congresswoman said the discussions of Shapiro being possibly added to the vice presidential candidate short list only reflects how the party has “so much talent” that Harris had to consider when picking her mate.

“I think that Gov. Walz has so many different assets that he brings to the table and I trust her decision,” she said.

Ocasio-Cortez was also pressed about the latest progressive “Squad” member, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), being defeated in her primary Tuesday night, following the loss of fellow progressive Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) in his June primary.

Ocasio-Cortez called Bush and Bowman “courageous” and said their losses reflected the corrupt “big money system” in political campaigns.
