Hollywood icon Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actress known for her roles in “The Godfather” and “Annie Hall,” has died at age 79
Keaton passed away Saturday in California, her family confirmed to People magazine. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
The actress, who rose to fame in the 1970s, enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades. She starred in iconic films including “The Godfather,” “Annie Hall,” “Baby Boom,” “First Wives Club,” and “Something’s Gotta Give.” Keaton was also a director, writer, photographer, and singer, and she adopted two children, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25.
An anonymous friend told People that Keaton’s health “declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.”
“It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit,” the friend added. “In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”

Keaton starred in a string of Woody Allen classics, including “Sleeper” (1973), “Love and Death” (1975), and “Manhattan” (1979). Her later roles in “Reds” (1981), which earned her another Oscar nomination, “Baby Boom” (1987), “Father of the Bride” (1991), and “Something’s Gotta Give” (2003) showcased her range across drama, comedy, and romance.
She also directed films like “Unstrung Heroes” (1995) and the documentary “Heaven” (1987), and published photography books.
Tributes poured in from Hollywood stars following the news. Bette Midler, Keaton’s “First Wives Club” co-star, wrote on social media: “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.”
“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!,” Midler added.
Keaton received the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. During the ceremony, Meryl Streep honored her, saying: “She has given us so much happiness.”
