Federal authorities have charged rioters who instigated violence against officers during last weekend’s clashes that followed a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation at an apartment building in Chicago.
Demonstrators quickly turned violent, with some hurling stones at ICE vehicles as they transported suspected illegal immigrant gang members to a nearby detention center. The events culminated with a man and woman using their vehicle to strike an ICE agent’s car and box others in near 39th Street and South Kedzie Avenue, according to a complaint unsealed by the U.S. Justice Department.
The filing states that officers returned fire and struck the woman, who was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Marimar Martinez and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz were both charged with forcibly assaulting, impeding, and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer. They remain in custody.
An ICE raid at a South Shore apartment building concluded with city Alderwoman Jessie Fuentes in handcuffs as Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson joined 37 other aldermen in protesting the Trump administration’s activity in their city.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security told ABC News that the building was targeted because it is “frequently” used for gang activity, especially the Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua.
But as local opposition to federal activity has grown increasingly violent, President Donald Trump has called for the arrest of Democratic politicians rebuffing his call to send National Guard soldiers onto city streets.
In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump demanded the DOJ arrest both Mayor Johnson and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who recently filed suit to prevent the state’s National Guard from being federalized.
“Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect ICE [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] Officers!” Mr. Trump posted. “Governor Pritzker also!”

Speaking at a rally later in the day, Pritzker — rumored to be a 2028 presidential contender — shrugged off Trump’s threat.
“Look, he’s a coward. He says a lot of things to the camera. He likes to pretend to be a tough guy. Come and get me. Come and get me,” Pritzker said, CBS News reported. “He’s demented, literally; unhinged. This is somebody who is so insecure that he lashes out, pretending that he can come arrest people for no reason at all. He can’t. He isn’t going to do it. TACO – Trump always chickens out.”
“Amidst ongoing violent riots and lawlessness, that local leaders like Pritzker have refused to step in to quell, President Trump has authorized 300 national guardsmen to protect federal officers and assets,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Axios in a statement.
“President Trump will not turn a blind eye to the lawlessness plaguing American cities.”
In the meantime, immigration rights advocates like the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and Southwest Rapid Response have offered immigrants a tip line to report ICE sightings and avoid areas of activity or mobilize protests.
