Two people were killed and another dozen were wounded late Saturday in Montgomery, Alabama, where gunmen opened fire on each other on a crowded street.
Gunfire began shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time in the state capital. Police described the incident as a mass shooting.
“This was two parties involved that were basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd,” Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys told reporters on Sunday. The shooters, he said, “did not care about the people around them when they did it.”
Of the 12 wounded casualties, three sustained life-threatening injuries and are being treated as such. Two minors were among the wounded.
The chaotic event unfolded in downtown Montgomery right after a college football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College.
No suspects in the mass shooting were arrested Sunday morning, but police officers are actively interviewing possible suspects and pursuing all leads to find the rival gunmen.

“We are urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward,” Montgomery Police Lt. Tina McGriff said to the public. “Even the smallest detail could be critical to helping investigators identify those responsible.”
Updates on the case are expected at a press conference scheduled for noon Sunday local time.
