During a recent appearance on CNN, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was forced to begrudgingly admit that President Donald Trump has practically sealed the border after a record number of illegal crossings under former President Joe Biden.
Host Pamela Brown noted that since President Donald Trump took office this past January, illegal border crossings and interior releases have been effectively halted. “Are you willing to give President Trump any credit for that?” Brown asked.
Jeffries initially attempted to sidestep the question with a long-winded response in which he attacked Trump’s policies.
“Well, let’s take the two issues together, right? First, we believe in a safe, a strong, and a secure border. And that’s important, and we’ll continue to stand behind that. At the same period of time, we acknowledge, of course, we have a broken immigration system. It needs to be fixed, but it should be fixed in a comprehensive and in a bipartisan way,” he said.
“The American people strongly disagree. with the approach that Donald Trump has taken in terms of interior enforcement and immigration. Because Republicans promised that they were going to go after violent felons, the House’s top Democrat added before claiming “we support that.”
Jeffries then accused the Trump Administration of targeting “law-abiding immigrant families” before falsely claiming that American citizens are also being deported. Continuing with his complete re-routing of the question, Jeffries went on to claim that the Trump Administration is underwater on the immigration issue by citing an outlier poll from Gallup.
“But in terms of the border, securing the border, can you give President Trump any credit for securing the border? Because as you know, that was a big issue under the Biden administration when you had record border crossings. And those border crossings have gone down dramatically,” Brown followed up. “Can you give him credit for that?”
At that point, Jeffries was forced to begrudgingly concede that border crossings have been effectively halted. “The border is secure. That’s a good thing. It’s happened on his watch. He wants to claim credit for it. Of course, he’ll get credit for that,” he said.
“In terms of making sure that we actually deal with the issues that matter, including on immigration or beyond, there’s a lot to d0… to be desired.”

As of December , the U.S. Border Patrol has reported zero releases of illegal aliens into the U.S. interior for seven consecutive months (May through November 2025), according to Department of Homeland Security statements. This stems from policy changes under the Trump administration, including ending “catch and release,” canceling the CBP One app — which allowed illegal aliens and asylum seekers to schedule their own entry into the United States regardless of asylum merit — and prioritizing deportations.
For comparison, the Biden Administration released about 85 percent of an average of 185,000 border encounters under the former president’s tenure, according to DHS and CBP data.
