Federal immigration agents under the Trump Administration have rescued more than 62,000 migrant children from situations involving sex trafficking and forced labor, White House border czar Tom Homan announced Sunday.
“Over half a million children were smuggled into this country under Joe Biden,” Homan said during an appearance on on “Fox & Friends” Sunday. “They lost track of 300,000. President Trump committed on day one that we will do everything we can to find every one of these children.”
“We know many of them are in sex trafficking. Many are in forced labor. Many are being abused,” Homan added. “I can’t discuss some of the mistreatment we found out about. President Trump again proved why he’s the greatest president in my lifetime. Over 62,000 children rescued.”
Data on human smuggling and trafficking at the U.S. border shows variation across administrations. During the Biden administration (2021–2025), border encounters included over 500,000 unaccompanied migrant children who were smuggled into the country. Of these, 300,000 were not followed up on after initial processing, according to government tracking systems.
In contrast, under the current Trump administration (as of December 2025), efforts have focused on recovery operations, resulting in the rescue of more than 62,000 children from trafficking-related situations. This represents a shift toward active search and recovery as border encounters remain at record lows.
The Trump administration launched an initiative in early 2025 to locate and rescue unaccompanied migrant children who entered the United States during the previous administration and were subsequently lost track of by federal authorities. President Donald Trump committed to this effort on his first day in office, January 20, 2025, as part of broader border security and anti-trafficking measures.
A dedicated team was assembled by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in March 2025 to address a backlog of over 65,000 ignored reports on these children. Subsequent phases included a formal rollout on July 25, 2025, led by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and an expansion on November 10, 2025, involving state and local law enforcement partnerships.
The initiative targets an estimated 300,000 to 450,000 unaccompanied children who were smuggled across the border and placed with unvetted sponsors under prior policies, many of whom faced risks of sex trafficking and forced labor.
Actions taken involve coordinated operations including welfare checks, sponsor investigations, door-to-door visits, and targeted enforcement against trafficking networks. It emphasizes reuniting children with families while prosecuting offenders.
“The evil of human trafficking cannot be overstated. It’s modern-day slavery. By leaving our borders open and even encouraging people to come here illegally, Biden enabled the largest human-trafficking operation in modern history,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said after a rescue operation this past July.
“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to eradicate human trafficking operations targeting the United States. Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, and working together at every level of government, we can win this fight. And we will.”
