Swimmers plunge into Seine River at Paris Olympics after water safety concerns

Olympic swimmers finally made their jump into the Seine River in Paris near the Pont Alexandre III on Wednesday morning after multiple delays over water safety concerns.

One of the most widely discussed venues for the Paris Olympics was the Seine River as the host of swimming for triathlon events and the marathon swim, but hosting the events was contingent on a costly cleanup effort to make the river swimmable for the first time in more than 100 years. Officials confirmed early Wednesday that the women’s and men’s triathlon events would proceed with swimming the Seine.

“The results of the latest water analyses, received at 3.20am, have been assessed as compliant by World Triathlon allowing for the triathlon competitions to take place,” a statement from Olympic organizers said Wednesday.

The women’s triathlon was the first event in which swimmers took the plunge into the river, followed by the men’s event later Wednesday. In the women’s event, France’s Cassandre Beaugrand won the gold medal, while in the men’s event, Great Britain’s Alex Yee won gold.

Because of inadequate water quality levels prior to Wednesday, two swimming training events in the Seine were canceled, and the men’s event, which was scheduled for Tuesday, was delayed until immediately after the women’s event on Wednesday.

Paris spent $1.5 billion to clean up the Seine River in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics, only seven years after landing the Games. The river also played host to Friday’s opening ceremony, which featured a pouring rain — only adding to concerns the Seine would not be clean enough for the swimming events.

One of the test events for the triathlon in the Seine held last year was canceled over concerns regarding the water’s safety for swimming. A contingency plan had been formulated whereby the swimming portion of the triathlon would be canceled if the water quality was not at a safe level by a certain date.

In Washington, D.C., efforts have been made to hold a swim in the Anacostia River in 2023 and 2024, but in both years, the event was called off due to unsafe levels of E. coli. The Potomac River had long been unsafe to swim in, but recent efforts have made the river safe enough to take a dip in, according to a recent report, though it is still illegal to do so.

Mark Kelly dodges VP questions but pumps up Kamala Harris credentials as a ‘cop’

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) is considered one of the leading contenders to be Vice President Kamala Harris‘s running mate, and he is working to reinforce her record as a prosecutor by equating her to a “cop.”

Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign was hurt by accusations from the left flank of the Democratic Party that she was too hard on crime, but as a general election candidate in 2024, she and her surrogates appear to be leaning into the “Kamala the cop” branding. Kelly, speaking on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Wednesday, dodged the question of whether he would be the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee, but he did emphasize Harris’s law background while stumping for her.

“We need to move this country forward. Kamala Harris is absolutely the right person to do this. She’s an experienced prosecutor. She fights crime. My parents were both cops. I looked at Kamala Harris, as you know, as a cop, as a prosecutor, an attorney general,” Kelly said.

“On the other hand, you have a guy who’s a convicted felon, and I have a granddaughter now, she’s 3 years old, and I just, the example that Donald Trump sets for kids, growing up with with this divisive politics, with lies, with criminal actions, it is very concerning for me and for the future of our country,” he added.

When asked if he has been in contact with the Harris campaign, possibly regarding a spot on the ticket, Kelly said he would not “get into any of that” and reiterated he is “focused on making sure that Kamala is the next president.” He also said he would be in Arizona next week, as Politico has reported that Harris and her vice presidential pick will blitz several swing states next week, including Arizona.

What to know about the NBA-TNT television rights drama thumbnail

What to know about the NBA-TNT television rights drama

The drama of the National Basketball Association typically plays out on the court, but a battle over who gets to cover the league’s games has prompted legal action from one of the networks currently airing NBA games.

The NBA announced its new television rights deal last week, signing with ESPN/ABC, NBC, and Amazon, but the new contract led one broadcaster not included to file a lawsuit against the league. Here is what to know about the dispute.

What is the current NBA television deal?

Under the current deal, which runs through the 2024-25 NBA season, ESPN/ABC and TNT essentially split the national television rights.

During the regular season, TNT gets the opening night games, the NBA All-Star Game, and games on Tuesdays and Thursdays. ESPN/ABC gets Wednesday, Friday, and select Saturday games, in addition to the Christmas Day games, among others, as part of its regular season package.

For the playoffs, the two split the early rounds, with NBA TV also getting a handful of games. TNT gets one conference championship each year, alternating between the Eastern and Western conferences, while ESPN/ABC gets the other conference championship and the NBA Finals.

ESPN/ABC and TNT have split the television rights for the NBA since the 2002-03 season. With TNT’s coverage is the popular studio show Inside the NBA, which features Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley.

What is the new television deal?

The NBA announced last week that it had agreed to a new television contract, for the 2025-26 through 2035-36 seasons, with ESPN/ABC, NBC, Amazon — leaving out TNT.

ESPN/ABC will continue to show games on Wednesday, along with select Saturday and Sunday games and the Christmas Day games, for 80 games during the regular season. The networks will also get the NBA Finals for each year of the contract, along with 18 games each year in the early playoff rounds and conference finals for 10 out of the 11 seasons of the contract.

NBC gets NBA coverage for the first time since 2002, receiving Sunday night and Tuesday games, along with the NBA All-Star game during the regular season. The network also gets the opening night games and two games on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, will get Monday night games as part of the package, which will see both NBC and Peacock get 100 regular season games each season. For the playoffs, NBC gets 28 first-round games and a conference championship in six of the 11 seasons of the contract.

Amazon gets NBA coverage for the first time, getting 66 regular season games on Thursdays, Fridays, and select Saturday afternoons. The streaming platform will also cover the NBA Cup, the play-in tournament, roughly a third of early-round playoff games, and a conference championship in six of the contract’s 11 seasons.

The emphasis of the NBA’s announcement was on streaming, with all three network partners having, or being, streaming platforms.

“Our new global media agreements with Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon will maximize the reach and accessibility of NBA games for fans in the United States and around the world,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “These partners will distribute our content across a wide range of platforms and help transform the fan experience over the next decade.”

TNT Sports claimed it matched Amazon’s offer, noting their contractual right under the current television deal, and said they “do not believe the NBA can reject it” in a statement Wednesday. The network also said they believe the NBA had “grossly misinterpreted out contractual rights with respect to the 2025-26 season and beyond” and teased they would “take appropriate action.”

Why is TNT suing the NBA?

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of TNT Sports, which itself is a division of Turner Broadcasting System, filed a lawsuit against the NBA in state court in New York on Friday.

The lawsuit alleges the NBA “refused to honor TBS’s match” of the deal Amazon had worked out with the NBA.

“TBS timely exercised these matching rights by accepting a Third Party Offer on the same material terms and conditions that the NBA was willing to accept from Amazon. The NBA, however, has breached the Agreement and deliberately refused to honor TBS’s rights, forcing TBS and WBD to seek judicial intervention,” the lawsuit alleges.

Warner Bros. Discovery is seeking the court to declare that TBS matched the Amazon offer, in compliance with their contractual obligation, and that TBS be permitted, via TNT and Max, to distribute the NBA games in the package. It also asked that, if the court cannot come to a ruling prior to the beginning of the 2025-26 season, the NBA be enjoined “from licensing the telecast rights that TBS matched under the Agreement (including the MRE) to Amazon or any other third party.”

What are the potential outcomes of the lawsuit?

If the court sides with Warner Bros. Discovery, TNT and Max would get the package Amazon has agreed to and continue to broadcast the NBA alongside ESPN/ABC and NBC. If the court does not side with Warner Bros. Discovery on its claims, then Amazon would be allowed to move forward with its package and TNT would lose its NBA rights.

Neither outcome would appear to affect ESPN/ABC or NBC’s parts of the deal, as Warner Bros. Discovery has not had a problem with either of those networks’ agreements with the NBA.

Will this affect TNT’s coverage of the 2024-25 NBA season?

Regardless of the lawsuit, TNT will still cover the 2024-25 NBA season, although the relationship between the network and the league will likely be colder than normal.

If TNT is unable to get Amazon’s package via the lawsuit, the final game of the Eastern conference finals in 2025 will be the last NBA game TNT will air for the foreseeable future.

Biden lays out plan to ‘reform’ Supreme Court in waning days of his presidency

President Joe Biden unveiled his plan for “three bold reforms” for the Supreme Court on Monday in an alleged attempt to “restore trust and accountability to the court and our democracy.”

Biden argued for his points of reforming the high court and reversing a recent decision made by the court in an opinion piece in the Washington Post. The president, who served in the Senate from 1973 to 2009, argued for term limits, a reformed Supreme Court ethics code, and wiping away immunity for the president for any acts.

“What is happening now is not normal, and it undermines the public’s confidence in the court’s decisions, including those impacting personal freedoms,” Biden wrote. “We now stand in a breach.”

Biden’s first proposal calls for a constitutional amendment, titled the “No One Is Above the Law Amendment,” which would “make clear that there is no immunity for crimes a former president committed while in office.”

The amendment would reverse a recent Supreme Court decision determining the president is immune from prosecution for official acts, but not unofficial acts, committed while in the White House. It would require approval from two-thirds of both chambers of Congress and ratification from three-fourths of states to pass, making it highly unlikely.

Biden also proposed term limits on the Supreme Court, suggesting 18-year terms so that a new justice may be appointed every two years.

“Term limits would help ensure that the court’s membership changes with some regularity. That would make timing for court nominations more predictable and less arbitrary. It would reduce the chance that any single presidency radically alters the makeup of the court for generations to come,” Biden wrote.

Under his 3 1/2 years in the White House, Biden has only had the chance to nominate one justice to the Supreme Court, while his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, had three appointments.

The presidency is limited to two full terms, or 10 years total, under the 22nd Amendment, while Congress and the Supreme Court have no term limits.

Biden also called the current ethics code “weak and self-enforced” while calling for a stronger ethics code that would make justices “required to disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest.”

Biden wrote that “we can and must prevent the abuse of presidential power,” along with restoring “the public’s faith in the Supreme Court.”

“In America, no one is above the law,” he wrote. “In America, the people rule.”

Biden has been at odds with the Supreme Court for his entire presidency, as the Republican-appointed majority court has struck down several of his actions as unconstitutional, such as his student loan plan and his attempted COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The high court’s decisions overturning Roe v. Wade and affirmative action also angered Biden, among other opinions delivered.

The plan formulated by the president has garnered criticism over separation-of-powers problems. With less than six months remaining in Biden’s presidency and a divided Congress, it is unlikely any of the proposed efforts will see congressional approval.

Harris’s ascension moves Maine out of Trump’s reach: Poll

Vice President Kamala Harris opened a healthy lead over former President Donald Trump in Maine after she replaced President Joe Biden as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

A University of New Hampshire poll released Thursday shows Harris leading Trump in a head-to-head matchup, 54%-45%, and by 48%-40% in a matchup including third-party candidates.

In 2020, Biden defeated Trump in the state by a 53%-44% margin, meaning Harris is currently in line with the president’s performance. Biden had only led Trump, 51%-49% in a head-to-head April poll from Digital Research.

Biden was dogged by concerns about his age and mental acuity following a disastrous debate performance against Trump in June, which saw the president’s poll numbers drop in several states. Polls in states believed to be safely in the Democratic column, including Virginia and Minnesota, showed Trump either close behind or ahead of Biden.

Early polls since Harris was tapped to replace Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket indicate that she performs better than Trump, but by how much has yet to be fully seen.

The poll released Thursday also showed that Trump maintains a solid lead in the state’s 2nd Congressional District. Maine is one of two states, alongside Nebraska, which awards its electoral votes for each congressional district, in addition to 2 at-large electoral votes for the overall state vote count.

Trump won the 2nd Congressional District in 2016 and 2020 and leads Harris, 44%-40%, in a full field of candidates. In the state’s heavily Democratic 1st Congressional District, Harris leads Trump, 56%-36%, in a full field, according to the poll.

Maine’s at-large electoral votes are considered “likely Democratic” by the Cook Political Report. The state’s 1st Congressional District is considered “solid Democratic,” while the state’s 2nd Congressional District is considered “likely Republican.”

California Supreme Court upholds proposition affirming Uber drivers as independent contractors thumbnail

California Supreme Court upholds proposition affirming Uber drivers as independent contractors

The California Supreme Court ruled in favor of upholding a 2020 proposition that affirmed gig workers, including Uber and Lyft drivers, as independent contractors.

Proposition 22 made an exception to Assembly 5, which classified what kind of workers were entitled to employee benefits from a company, to allow gig workers, like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and similar drivers, to be considered independent contractors. The proposition passed 58.6%-41.4% when it appeared on the ballot in November 2020. The court unanimously upheld the constitutionality of the measure on Thursday, keeping the gig economy the same in the Golden State.

“We affirm the judgment of the Court of Appeal insofar as it held that Business and Professions Code section 7451 does not conflict with article XIV, section 4 of the California Constitution,” Goodwin Liu wrote in the opinion of the court Thursday.

The proposition was backed by the ride-share and delivery apps that rely on gig workers to power their service. The coalition argued the measure allowed drivers to remain flexible with their hours while still providing for some health benefits. Molly Weedn, a spokeswoman for Protect App Based Drivers + Services, celebrated the decision in a statement on Thursday.

“The California Supreme Court ruling is an overwhelming victory for voters’ rights and the integrity of our state’s initiative system,” Weedn said. “This ruling is not just a win for the nearly 1.4 million drivers who rely on the flexibility of app-based work to make ends meet, but for millions of consumers and thousands of businesses who rely on app-based services across the state. The courts have spoken, and this issue can finally be put to rest.”

The legal saga involving Proposition 22 began shortly after it passed, with a state superior court judge ruling the measure unconstitutional in August 2021. The superior court decision would be overruled by a state appellate court, which ruled in March 2023 that the proposition was lawful.

The state Supreme Court’s decision marks the likely end of the road for the battle over the constitutionality of the ballot measure.

Melania Trump to release first memoir in fall thumbnail

Melania Trump to release first memoir in fall

Former first lady Melania Trump announced Thursday she will be releasing her first memoir in the coming months.

The book, titled Melania, will be released prior to Election Day and published by Skyhorse Publishing, according to the Associated Press. The former first lady’s office said the memoir will include “stories and images never before shared with the public.”

Melania is the powerful and inspiring story of a woman who has defined personal excellence, overcome adversity, and carved her own path. The former First Lady invites readers into her world, offering an intimate portrait of a woman who has lived an extraordinary life,” the former first lady’s website said.

The standard copy of the book is being sold for $40, while a signed edition is being sold for $75 and a collector’s edition, which is signed and comes with bonus photos and a “digital collectable,” is being sold for $150.

Melania Trump has made few public appearances since she and her husband, former President Donald Trump, left the White House in January 2021. In the past year, however, she has been seen in public more frequently. Melania Trump joined other former first ladies, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama, along with current first lady Jill Biden, at the funeral of former first lady Rosalynn Carter in November 2023, and spoke at a naturalization ceremony at the National Archives in December 2023.

For her husband’s campaign, she participated in two fundraisers with the Republican LGBT group Log Cabin Republicans, and appeared at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last week, but did not speak at the convention, as she did in 2016 and 2020.

Melania Trump made a rare public statement after her husband was nearly killed in an assassination attempt earlier this month, saying she and her son, Barron, “were on the brink of devastating change.”

Salt Lake City selected as host for 2034 Winter Olympics thumbnail

Salt Lake City selected as host for 2034 Winter Olympics

The Olympics will return to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 10 years after the International Olympic Committee selected the capital of the Beehive State to host the 2034 Winter Olympics on Tuesday.

Months after the IOC opted to enter a “targeted dialogue” with Salt Lake City for the 2034 games, a vote of the committee Wednesday in Paris made the selection official by an 83-6 vote. Salt Lake City previously hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.

“Salt Lake City and Utah are long-time friends of the Olympic Movement, and we are confident that they will organise exceptional Olympic and Paralympic Games, just as they did years ago,” IOC President Thomas Bach said Wednesday. “The legacy of 2002 is tangibly and passionately alive in Utah. The legacy of 2034 starts today.”

Gov. Spencer Cox (R-UT) celebrated the selection on Wednesday after years of efforts to return the Winter Games to the United States.

“The Olympics and Paralympics represent so much more than competition. At its core, the Olympic Movement is about building community and celebrating excellence, things we do really well in Utah,” Cox said in a statement. “More than 80 per cent of Utahns and 100 per cent of our elected leaders supported our Olympic bid. We’re ready to host another Olympic Winter Games, and we can’t wait to welcome the world back to Utah in 2034.”

A crowd gathered in the Salt Lake City early Wednesday morning celebrated the decision, which brings the winter games back to the U.S., for the first time in decades.

Salt Lake City and the Olympic and Paralympic Movement are deeply connected through values – our commitment to diversity, love for our youth and the tireless work to preserve our environment. These principles are shared through the lens of sport,” Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said Wednesday.

“I can’t imagine a better partnership than the one we continue to forge with our Olympic partners,” she added.

As part of the celebration, officials relit the 2002 Olympic cauldron at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The stadium, which hosts the University of Utah’s football team, has been proposed to host the opening and closing ceremony for the 2034 games, as it did for the 2002 games.

The bid from Salt Lake City plans for the games to utilize all existing or temporary venues, after past Olympic hosts have decried the cost of building new venues for hosting the games.

Tammy Murphy would not accept Senate appointment to replace Bob Menendez

Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) will have to appoint a replacement when Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) resigns from the Senate next month, but the governor’s wife, Tammy Murphy has said she would not take the spot.

Menendez put in his resignation notice on Tuesday, after being convicted on corruption charges by a federal court last week. He will leave the Senate effective Aug. 20. Tammy Murphy, who ran for the Senate seat earlier this year before dropping her bid prior to the Democratic primary, announced on Tuesday that she would not accept an appointment to the seat.

“I am thrilled that New Jersey will soon have the representation we need and deserve in the U.S. Senate. I am confident the Governor will appoint a steady hand to guide us over the coming months,” Murphy said.

“While I’m grateful for the humbling support and outreach I’ve received since last year, I want to reiterate that I will not accept an appointment to the U.S. Senate,” she added.

Phil Murphy said in a statement on Tuesday that he had received Menendez’s resignation letter and that he “will exercise my duty to make a temporary appointment to the United States Senate to ensure the people of New Jersey have the representation they deserve.”

The person filling the next full term for Menendez’s seat will be decided in November, when Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) and Republican Curtis Bashaw face off. Menendez has also launched an independent bid to keep his seat, and said he would continue the bid if he is exonerated.

The race for Menendez’s seat in November has been rated as “solid Democrat” by the Cook Political Report.

Three Democrats who have said they won’t be Kamala Harris’s vice president

Vice President Kamala Harris is exploring her options for a running mate as she ascends to the top of the Democratic Party’s ticket, but three possibilities have already said they aren’t interested in joining her.

With President Joe Biden’s Sunday announcement to drop out and endorse Harris to replace him, Democrats are in a race to complete their presidential ticket a week after Republicans ended their monthslong search for former President Donald Trump’s running mate. While several Democrats have hinted at seeking a spot on the ticket, these three said they aren’t in contention.

Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD)

Moore, widely seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, has endorsed Harris to be the party’s nominee for president and has vowed to stump for her, but he said he would not leave Maryland and take the vice presidential nomination.

“I have expressed that I love my job, and I have no intention of leaving,” Moore said on Monday, according to CBS News. “I think that where she goes is going to be a very personal decision for her. I think she’s going to have wonderful options to consider.”

The Maryland governor has been praised for his response to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in March and has been floated as a future presidential candidate for the Democratic Party.

Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV)

Manchin, an independent who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, had considered re-registering as a Democrat and throwing his name into consideration for the presidential nomination after Biden stepped aside, but he ruled out a run.

When Manchin announced he would not seek the Democratic presidential nomination, he also ruled out taking a spot on the ticket. He flatly told CNN on Monday that he would not join Harris on the ticket and declined to endorse the vice president. Manchin called for an open primary contest ahead of the convention, but a majority of Democratic National Convention delegates instead went forward with backing Harris before any other candidates could materialize.

The West Virginia senator is not seeking reelection to represent the increasingly Republican state after being first elected in 2010.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI)

Whitmer, a star in the Democratic Party and a possible future presidential candidate, has been one of the names floated as a running mate to Harris and has appeared in some reports about candidates the Harris campaign is vetting. The Michigan governor, however, has made clear she is not leaving the Great Lakes State.

“I am not leaving Michigan. I am proud to be the governor of Michigan. I’ve been consistent. I know everyone is always suspicious and asking this question over and over again,” Whitmer told WLNS on Monday.

Whitmer also said Monday she was “fired up” to endorse Harris for president and announced she would serve as a co-chairwoman for the vice president’s campaign.

While these three have declined to be Harris’s vice president, several other Democrats appear to be jockeying for the spot on the ticket. Govs. Andy Beshear (D-KY), Roy Cooper (D-NC), Tim Walz (D-MN), and Josh Shapiro (D-PA), along with Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), have been floated as possibilities.

Harris will have to make her decision before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago from Aug. 19-22 or before a virtual nominating process that could be held earlier in August.
