Stella Parton, 76, stepped into the spotlight on Wednesday to defend her sister, Dolly Parton, and set the record straight on her health following alarming social media posts. Stella revealed the “9 to 5” singer has been enduring kidney stones and undergoing treatment, not battling some undisclosed serious illness.
Dolly, now 79, raised concern nationwide when she postponed six shows of her Las Vegas residency, citing “health challenges.” Her sister, Freida, fueled the worry by writing she had been “up all night praying” for Dolly.
In her post on X, Stella explained, “She posted a video last week … that she has had kidney stones and is getting treatment.” She added, “My sister Freida is always concerned … so she ask for prayers on Dolly’s behalf. It’s my job … to love and respect their privacy.”
Stella did not shy away from frustration, calling out those demanding answers: “To those of you who make it your job to attack me … you need to go check their pages! Most fans are genuinely concerned but some of you are way out of line.”
Dolly’s team later confirmed the kidney stone diagnosis. Olly Rowland, her U.K. manager, acknowledged the situation had been “blown out of proportion,” saying: “It’s just the kidney stones, and the procedure she needs to resolve those.”
Freida also issued a clarification on Facebook: “I didn’t mean to scare anyone or make it sound so serious … She’s been a little under the weather … It was nothing more than a little sister asking for prayers for her big sister.” Earlier, she had asked fans to be “prayer warriors” as Dolly continued to feel unwell.
Dolly first alerted fans on September 28 that she would postpone the December 2025 run of Dolly: Live in Las Vegas until September 2026, explaining she must undergo a few medical procedures and would need time to rest.
In a statement at the time, she joked with her audience: “It must be time for my 100,000-mile checkup, although it’s not the usual trip to see my plastic surgeon!” But she insisted she was not retiring and planned to return.
Earlier this year, Dolly missed a Dollywood announcement in Tennessee, citing complications from a kidney stone that had led to infection. She told fans she had been advised by doctors not to travel, though she remained connected to the event in spirit.
While her delay has spurred speculation, those close to Dolly affirm she is stable and recovering.
