Following a White House roundtable discussion on Antifa-linked and other far-left violence on Wednesday, President Donald Trump indicated that he is preparing to designate the black bloc militant group as a foreign terrorist organization.
The move comes on the heels of the president’s decision to label the black bloc organization as a foreign terrorist group last month. Designating the group as a foreign terrorist organization would give prosecutors expanded powers to prosecute members, as well as individuals found to be involved with financing and supporting the group.
On Wednesday, a number of leading reporters on Antifa violence, in addition to other experts, participated in a roundtable discussion headed up by President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi. In attendance was Nick Sortor, a conservative journalist who was recently subjected to a controversial arrest by the Portland Police Bureau, and Andy Ngo, who is widely considered to be the leading voice on covering Antifa extremism in Portland and beyond.
Ngo suffered a brain bleed when he was brutally beaten by Antifa militants in Portland in 2019.
Short for “antifascist,” the black-bloc group operates hundreds of chapters across the United States. Supporters claim that there is no uniform Antifa organization, though localized groups fly the same flag, dress similarly and participate in similar operations.
The group is most infamous for their activities in the Pacific Northwest, where dozens members in cities like Portland and Seattle have been arrested for acts of political violence. Dozens of Antifa members were charged for setting fire to federal buildings in downtown Portland during the Black Lives Matter riots in 2020, the murder of a Trump supporter by a self-identified Antifa member in August of that year, and numerous acts of arson during the peak of unrest in 2020 and 2021.
After listening to the panel, President Trump indicated that he is readying a new directive to label the organization as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO). “I think it’s the kind of thing I’d like to do,” Trump told reporters when asked if he was considering the designation.
“Does everybody agree? If you agree, I agree. Let’s get it done,” the president added while motioning to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

According to the State Department, FTOs are foreign organizations designated as terrorist in accordance with section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act. It is unlawful for a U.S. citizen or any individual subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S. to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to a designated FTO, which includes such groups as Hamas, al Qaeda, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and several drug cartels, among other groups.
Much like their operations in the U.S., Antifa has several active chapters in Europe, particularly in Western Europe’s most populous cities. The groups are largely decentralized on a national or international level, though they still operate individual chapters with identical flags, similar uniforms and collaboration with other cells.
Antifa cells have also been implicated in a number of violent attacks in Europe over the last several years, including a high-profile incident in which around 150 members attacked police with projectiles and attempted to storm the first European Remigration Summit in Milan, Italy this past May.
In 2023, a group of 15 German and Italian Antifa members used hammers and metal pipes to carry out six separate assaults on civilians they deemed “enemies,” targeting individuals in surprise attacks. Those attacks took place in Budapest, Hungary, while a similar series of assaults took place in Leipzig, Germany in 2023. Antifa and related far-left groups have been involved in several additional clashes with police in France, Germany, Italy, and elsewhere in Europe.
On September 18, 2025, the Dutch parliament adopted a motion from opposition leader Geert Wilders calling on the government to classify Antifa as a terrorist organization. Wilders’ motion accused cells belonging to the international far-left group in the Netherlands of threatening politicians, disrupting public events, and intimidating students and journalists.
