A beloved voice in midwestern talk radio is signing off following a devastating cancer diagnosis.

Angela Davis, the longtime host of Minnesota Public Radio, broke the news to her listeners on Monday that she has been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer.

MPR said in a statement: “Angela is deeply grateful for the support of her colleagues and listeners, and she asks for privacy during this time. We look forward to welcoming her back when she is ready.”

No return date is on the horizon for Davis, a 57-year-old mother of two.

She wrote on Facebook that she was “touched by your support as she focuses on her recovery.”

Davis has been an unforgettable contributor to Minnesota’s local news scene. She has hosted MPR’s 9 am weekday show, which bills itself as covering “life in Minnesota and how the state is changing.”

Fans of the public broadcaster shared messages of love and resilience on social media moments after the news became public.

“Thinking of you! I’m a 20 year [breast cancer] survivor…you’ve got this!!!” wrote listener Carolyn Amos Storey.

“You’ll come out of this with amazing discoveries of your own strength and resilience, and the compassion of people around you!!”

Lindsay Strand added: “Angela, you have a special and excellent way of communicating.

“Wishing you an excellent outcome on this journey.”

Jonathon Glennie posted: “You are a fighter AD. We will hear you again soon.”

Jan DeSirey said, “I’ll be thinking of you as well as you travel this winding journey.

“Stay strong, keep family and friends close, and let them help take care of you. I hope to hear you back on the airwaves whenever you are ready.”

Davis spent most of her career helming the airwaves, whether as a host for KSTP, WCCO, or MPR, where she began in 2018.

She graduated with a degree in journalism, and her first job out of school was manning the breaking news desk for CNN.

In previous interviews, Davis spoke about her need to shift to radio from television, saying it was “very forgettable, demanding and stressful” working in cable news.

“I needed to do something more meaningful. When I learned MPR was looking for a talk show host, I was interested,” she told the Pioneer Press in 2019.

“During the interview, I said, ‘If you want someone to be the traditional voice of public radio, you’re taking a gamble with me. That’s not my background. I need to be me.’”

Davis and her husband, Duchesne Drew, share two children, Charlotte and Kevin. The MPR morning show will be guest-hosted until the station can find a more permanent replacement, the Daily Mail reported.
