David Hogg makes first primary endorsement targeting Democratic incumbent

Former Democratic National Committee Vice Chairman David Hogg made his first primary endorsement, targeting incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI).

Hogg caused a stir while serving as DNC vice chairman for advocating primarying perceived ineffective incumbent Democrats, a move that ultimately cost him his position. Now running his own political group, Leaders We Deserve, Hogg announced his first endorsement, backing state Rep. Donavan McKinney, 33, against Thanedar, 70.

“Thanedar is exactly the kind of out-of-touch, ineffective, and out-for-himself incumbent we want to kick out of office,” Hogg said in a statement, calling him “a terrible representative for the Democratic Party.”

“This is our first incumbent challenge; it won’t be our last,” he added.

Hogg elaborated in a post on X, saying Thanedar spent “$1 mil in taxpayer dollars on self-promoting ads, took millions from AIPAC, and has some of the worst constituent services.”

McKinney, in contrast, “secured millions for gun violence intervention programs, replaced toxic lead pipes, and wrote legislation to take on monopoly utilities preying on the working class,” Hogg added.

McKinney also enjoys the backing of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and the Justice Democrats, a group known for backing young liberal challengers to older incumbents.

THANEDAR SUCCUMBS TO PRESSURE AND PULLS TRUMP IMPEACHMENT RESOLUTION

The state Democrat welcomed Hogg’s support for his “people-powered campaign.”

Thanedar earned widespread criticism among Democrats earlier this year for filing articles of impeachment against Trump, a hopeless attempt viewed by many of his fellow party members as self-serving.
