House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) struggled to provide a coherent answer when “Meet The Press” host Kristen Welker confronted him with the fact that the Democrat minority in the U.S. Senate has been refusing to vote to fund the government.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has been successful in convincing all but three of his caucus members to against the House-passed temporary funding measure that will fund the government through late November. Democrats are calling for massive increases in temporary spending — some of which will go towards healthcare benefits for illegal aliens — and an extension of Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits that are set to expire.
Senators John Fetterman (D-PA), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Angus King (I-ME) are the only members of the Democratic Party caucus who have voted with Republicans to end the shutdown, which is now projected to last upwards of three weeks.
Welker confronted Jeffries with this reality during Sunday’s installment of “Meet The Press.”
“Let me ask you, because you say this is a Republican shutdown but it’s Democratic senators who are withholding their votes on what is called a clean resolution,” Welker noted. “That means no strings attached, which is something, quite frankly, leader, that you and other Democrats have advocated for in the past.”
Jeffries was then forced to watch clips of himself calling on Republicans to pass a clean continuing resolution while slamming them for using the threat of a shutdown to achieve political aims.
“Why not fund the government and debate extending Obamacare tax credits after the fact? They don’t expire till the end of the year,” Welker asked.
“What we’ve called for is a bipartisan negotiation where Democrats and Republicans can sit down in good faith, reopen the government, pass a spending bill that actually improves the quality of life for the American people in an environment where the cost of living is already too high,” Jeffries responded, opting for a boilerplate response rather than explaining his past statements.
“Republicans promised to lower costs on day one. Costs aren’t going down. They’re going up. And if these Affordable Care Act tax credits are allowed to expire, premiums and health care costs are going to skyrocket. And America is already, uh, too expensive for the American people because of the Trump failed policies, the Trump tariffs, and this will make things worse.”
