Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that a second attack targeting federal agents occurred in the Chicago area on Saturday. The announcement comes after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) vehicles were rammed and pinned down by multiple rioters, at least one of whom was armed with a semiautomatic firearm.
McLaughlin confirmed Saturday that agents were forced to return fire when they came under attack not far from a federal facility in the community of Broadview, which has been the site of sustained anti-ICE riots for several weeks.
One of the individuals, identified by prosecutors as Marimar Martinez, was injured by gunfire, and received medical treatment at a local hospital after the shooting, according to prosecutors. She and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz are accused of using vehicles to ram into a vehicle being driven by ICE Customs and Border Patrol agents in Chicago.
Both individuals were charged with assaulting, impeding and interfering with law enforcement, according to the United States’ Attorney’s Office.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker downplayed the incident and suggested that it may not have happened at all while speaking with CNN on Sunday. “So here, it’s really hard to know exactly what the facts are, and they won’t let us access the facts. They are just putting out their propaganda, and then we’ve got to later determine what actually happened,” he said.
Footage circulating online Sunday shows footage of a vehicle ramming a pickup truck being driven by federal agents. Another federal vehicle then pulled up behind the scene before the vehicle crashed not far down the road.
McLaughlin soon took to social media to announce that the footage was not related to the attack allegedly carried out by Martinez and Ruiz, but from another ramming attack targeting federal agents that took place on the same day.
“This footage is NOT from the attack in Chicago involving the 10 car caravan blockading our law enforcement, not involving ‘La Maggie,’” McLaughlin posted on X.
“This is from ANOTHER vehicular assault later that day in Chicago where an individual rammed an [ICE)] vehicle,” the post continued. “This violence is rampant, as much as JB Pritzker wants to white wash the facts on the ground.”

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced Saturday night that additional federal personnel would be deployed to the Chicago area in order to provide security and combat rising political violence.
“Today in Chicago, members of our brave law enforcement were attacked—rammed and boxed in by ten vehicles, including an attacker with a semi-automatic weapon,” Noem posted on X. “I am deploying more special operations to control the scene. Reinforcements are on their way.”
