Kamala Harris’s inflation ‘solution’: Nixon’s price controls and Trump’s tax policy

While President Joe Biden gave Vice President Kamala Harris a short enough campaign season for her to evade any real scrutiny from Democratic hagiographers in the media, Harris could theoretically pull from her prior failed 2020 presidential bid to fill up her currently non-existent slate of policy proposals.

But even as Harris pretends she never endorsed nationalizing 30% of the nation’s economy and banning private health insurance and fracking, she has taken a full month to borrow from different presidential campaigns to construct a new fiscal policy agenda. From former President Richard Nixon, she is taking the tried and failed doctrine of price controls. And, oddly, she is trying to steal the current tax proposals of her opponents: Former president Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).

A mere matter of months after Trump broke from Republican orthodoxy to endorse exempting tips from personal income taxation for service workers, Harris announced that same policy as her first-ever economic proposal as her party’s presidential nominee. It’s weird enough to borrow your political opponent’s idea without attribution, but it’s even stranger that the Biden-Harris administration has intentionally beefed up IRS enforcement specifically to collect more from tipped workers. And its PRO Act proposal would jack up those same workers’ taxes even further. Harris is contradicting her own administration’s policy without admitting it.

Then, just a few days after Vance endorsed a $5,000 child tax credit, Harris announced her support for a $6,000 one.

Where Harris really takes the cake is her primary solution to the inflation created by her tiebreaking votes for the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan and $1.3 trillion Inflation Reduction Act. In response to a 20% increase in overall prices since she became vice president, and a 4% decrease in real average weekly wages, Harris has borrowed from a president who began the only inflationary cycle worse than the one stoked by her and Biden: Former President Richard Nixon.

Like Nixon, Harris wants to crush the inflation she created with literal price controls.

A version of a Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)-authored bill that Harris co-sponsored while she was in the Senate, the vice president’s new plan would freeze grocery prices nationwide by empowering the Federal Trade Commission, as well as state attorneys general, “to investigate and levy penalties on food companies that violate the federal ban.”

The Nixon shock was enacted with a similar purpose and resulted in predictable disaster. As Harris and Biden have tried to do with an unprecedented series of annual $2 trillion deficits, Nixon intentionally wanted to devalue the U.S. dollar, which he did successfully by blowing up the Bretton Woods international monetary system only to be met with catastrophic consequences, and use price controls to avoid the unavoidable consequence of inflation.

Although those Nixon price controls earned temporary plaudits from the economic illiterates at the New York Times, all they did was delay and exacerbate the inevitable. Long before the start of the Arab Oil embargo that has retroactively received disproportionate blame for the stagflation of the 70s, Nixon’s price controls produced dramatic shortages of gas and energy. When the price and wage controls, which Nixon said would last for only 90 days, were lifted two years later, inflation rapidly doubled from an annual rate of 3% in 1972 to 6% the year later and 11% the year after that.

Harris’s plan would prove no less idiotic and, given the target, perhaps would be even more so. Unlike the rest of the private industry, which generates an average profit margin of 8.5%, grocery stores only average a profit margin of a single percentage point. And unlike hotel prices, which are up 44% since Biden took office, and gasoline, which is up 49%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that the prices of food at home, or groceries, have increased 21.08%, which is roughly on par with the overall consumer price index increase of almost 20%.

Harris may not want to borrow from her own prior flirtations with socialism, and stealing from Trump and Vance doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in her intellect. But poaching from the proto-communist experiments that created the only inflationary crisis worse than her own would make the implosion of Bidenomics seem like a warm-up to the main event.

Is Tim Walz a bald-faced liar, or does he have horrendous judgment?

Imagine you are the president of the United States and have a difficult and momentous decision to make. This decision requires prudence and good judgment. You call on your closest advisers to help you make this decision, and this includes the vice president.

The vice president gives you his considered assessment of the situation and leaves the room. As you consider this advice, you try to assess how good a judge he is of various circumstances. Then you recall he said this:

In July, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) said, “We have his back” about President Joe Biden and then flatly stated, “Yes, he’s fit for office.”

It’s hard to imagine how anyone could think that Biden is fit for office, much less fit for another four years in office. Biden’s horrific debate performance in June was simply the most public display of Biden’s mental decline.

In the weeks after Biden’s debate performance, dozens of Democrats who had interacted with Biden described a man who was about as confused, tired, and mentally frayed as you would expect a man of Biden’s age to be.

Yet Walz met with Biden in July and stated that Biden was “fit for office.”

So the questions for Walz, not that Walz or Vice President Kamala Harris take questions, are these:

  1. Do you think it’s OK for the president to be constantly confused?
  2. Do you think it’s OK for the president to fully function only between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.?
  3. Were you simply lying about his well-being because, as you said in that press conference, the only thing you care about is winning elections?
  4. What are you lying about today in order to win an election?

Walz is either extremely dishonest or has extremely poor judgment (or both!). Harris tapped him to be her main proxy on the campaign trail and her main adviser in the presidency. That doesn’t reflect well on Harris.

Secret Service grants Trump bulletproof glass for rallies: Report

Former President Donald Trump’s hope to resume outdoor rallies is closer to becoming reality after the Secret Service made arrangements for Trump to have a three-sided bulletproof glass panel surrounding his podium.

While ballistic-proof glass is typically reserved for sitting presidents, former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle included it as one of the new security measures for Trump following the attempt on his life on July 13.

During an outdoor rally in Butler Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old gunman fired multiple shots at the former president from the roof of a nearby building. Trump was nicked in the ear by a bullet, but two members of the crowd were seriously injured and one person was killed.

That was the first assassination attempt on a presidential candidate since George Wallace in 1972 and the first on a current or former president since Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Since the attempt on Trump’s life, all of his rallies have been held indoors, much to the dismay of the former president.

“They’d prefer that we be in an arena,” Trump said during an indoor venue in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, two weeks after the assassination attempt. “I don’t know why. But we’re not giving up the outdoor rallies. You know, all those people that we had to turn away today, at an outdoor rally you can have.”

Former Secret Service agent Don Mihalek told ABC News that the bulletproof glass is not so simple to transport.

“This isn’t just a piece of glass but a large, bulky, and heavy armored glass that will require extensive logistics capability, normally reserved for large-scale outdoor events,” Mihalek told ABC News.

The Secret Service has reserved multiple UpArmored glass panels for the former president, and they will be stored in different locations throughout the country. When needed, they will be able to be transported to where Trump is speaking.

Since the attempt on Trump’s life, personnel from President Joe Biden’s personal Secret Service detail have been transferred to the former president. That comes as Trump faces increased risk levels and Biden’s travel schedule has been greatly reduced.

Secret Service pulling from Biden’s security team to protect Trump: Report

The Secret Service allegedly pulled from President Joe Biden’s security detail to add protection for former President Donald Trump after he narrowly escaped assassination.

The decision to reduce a sitting president’s detail was unusual but necessary, according to a report from the New York Times

With Biden relying on security for fewer events as his pace slows, the Secret Service felt it was safe to shift agents temporarily to protect Trump.

Donald Mihalek, who worked for the Secret Service for two decades before retiring in 2019, offered further insight into the decision.

Milhalek said the agency’s methodology is “flexible” and made to “address known, and unknown, threats.”

“The steps the Secret Service is taking are a natural part of its asymmetrical approach to assure their no-fail mission is fulfilled,” he told the outlet.

The embattled agency faced heavy scrutiny after it failed to stop a would-be assassin from opening fire on Trump during an outdoor rally in July. While Secret Service agents were made aware numerous times of the massive security threat prior to the shooting, a gunman shot Trump, killed one spectator, and seriously injured two others.

After facing heavy pressure to resign, Kimberly Cheatle, the agency’s head, stepped down last month.

Trump has not held an outdoor rally since the July debacle, but the Secret Service announced plans to provide additional security should he decide to do so. Ballistic glass, which is designed to repel bullets, will be used at outdoor rallies in the future.

Harris proposes expanding prescription drug price caps in populist bid for presidency thumbnail

Harris proposes expanding prescription drug price caps in populist bid for presidency

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to announce on Friday plans to cap the price of insulin and impose limits on household spending on prescription drugs, populist measures that would go beyond the policies implemented by President Joe Biden and are aimed at shoring up middle-class support in the election.

Harris’s campaign said Friday that she would expand the Inflation Reduction Act’s $35 cap on insulin prices to the entire country. Currently, the cap applies only to beneficiaries of Medicare, the government program for seniors and people with disabilities.

She also plans to mandate that all health insurance plans require a $2,000 out-of-pocket maximum for prescription drugs, a provision that is supposed to take effect under the IRA for Medicare beneficiaries in 2025.

Harris’s plan to impose lower prices for all people rather than just Medicare patients will likely require an additional act from Congress. When the IRA was passed in 2022, Harris was the tiebreaking vote in the Senate, and no Republicans in either chamber voted for the legislation.

The effects on the budget for expanding the cap on insulin and out-of-pocket prescription costs are also largely unknown.

The $2,000 out-of-pocket prescription cap for Medicare beneficiaries was estimated to increase federal spending by $30 billion between 2022 and 2031, according to the nonprofit healthcare think tank KFF. The insulin cap was estimated to cost approximately $5.1 billion during the same period.

Harris joined President Joe Biden at a rally on Thursday celebrating the two-year anniversary of the IRA. Biden said that expanding the cap on the price of insulin beyond Medicare beneficiaries will be a priority for the remainder of his administration.

“The next three months we got here — I’m not leaving here — and Kamala, when she’s president, is going to make sure we get it done. Everybody should qualify for that $35. Every American. I mean it,” Biden said in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Harris also announced on Friday that her administration intends to accelerate the speed of the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program, which allows the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to negotiate directly with pharmaceutical companies for the price of prescriptions.

The first round of negotiated maximum fair prices for the 10 most expensive drugs to the Medicare program, announced by CMS this week, will take effect in 2026.

The first two rounds of negotiations only apply to Medicare Part D drugs, or those that are administered at home by patients themselves. Up to 20 drugs, including Medicare Part B prescriptions, or those administered in hospital settings such as chemotherapy, will be up for negotiations, with prices to take effect in 2028.

“Building on the Biden-Harris administration’s work to allow Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs and cut the cost of some of the most expensive and most commonly used drugs by nearly 40% to 80% starting in 2026, Vice President Harris will allow Medicare to accelerate the speed of negotiations so the prices of more drugs come down faster,” Friday’s announcement from the Harris-Walz campaign noted.

The measure seems to follow another of the expansions teased by Biden in recent weeks.

Biden, along with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), in July wrote an opinion piece calling for pharmaceutical companies to lower the prices of their products voluntarily. The piece also alluded to legislation in the works to increase the number of drugs up for price negotiations each year from 20 to 50.

Friday’s announcement is the first concrete declaration of Harris’s healthcare policies since starting her campaign for president last month following Biden’s move no longer to seek reelection.

During her bid for the 2020 Democratic nomination, Harris initially supported Sanders’s “Medicare for All” plan, which would have eliminated any role for private insurance.

She subsequently during the campaign drafted her own version of Medicare for All that allowed some room for a heavily regulated private insurance market, which was criticized by both sides of the aisle as a flip-flop.

Although the legislative path forward on expanding these Biden-era policies to private plans is unclear, there may be bipartisan support for some of the measures included in Harris’s plan.

Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, for example, supported the idea of Medicare being able to negotiate directly the price of prescriptions during his 2022 Senate campaign for Ohio.

House Oversight opens investigation into Tim Walz’s ties to China thumbnail

House Oversight opens investigation into Tim Walz’s ties to China

The House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into vice presidential candidate Tim Walz over his long-standing history with China over concerns it could pose national security threats if he were elevated to the White House next year.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced the investigation on Friday, citing reports that Walz has visited the country 30 times over the decades by his own estimation, including for his honeymoon with his wife. In a letter sent to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Comer pressed the agency to provide access to all documents and communications related to the Chinese Communist Party’s connected entities as well as officials whom Walz has engaged with over the years.

“The CCP has sought to destroy the United States through coordinated influence and infiltration campaigns that target every aspect of American life, including our own elected officials,” Comer said in a statement. “FBI briefers recently informed the Committee that the Bureau’s Foreign Influence Task Force investigates CCP activity that is similar to China’s engagement with Governor Walz. The American people deserve to fully understand how deep Governor Walz’s relationship with China goes.”

Comer cited reports of “concerning ties” between Walz and the People’s Republic of China, including a trip he organized while he was a teacher at Alliance High School in 1993. That trip was reportedly paid for by the Chinese government, according to the Star-Herald.

Comer also pointed to Walz’s private company named Educational Travel Adventures that he created the next year, which was designed to coordinate annual student trips to the PRC. That group was later dissolved shortly after he was sworn into the House in 2007, according to the chairman.

Walz’s ties to China have become a flashpoint for Republicans in recent weeks, with GOP lawmakers scrutinizing how his extensive time in the communist nation may have influenced his foreign policy stances or whether he would be reluctant to confront Chinese aggression as vice president.

“I’m not sure what taking over 30 trips to China, including for his honeymoon, says about Tim Walz’s posture towards China,” Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), House Homeland Security Committee chairman, told the Washington Examiner. “But perhaps if the Harris-Walz campaign were willing to take questions from reporters, we could find out.”

The Harris-Walz campaign has rejected such criticisms, instead pointing to Walz having condemned China’s human rights record. The Washington Examiner contacted the campaign for comment.

When Walz first began visiting China, U.S.-China relations were not as adversarial, as the two nations actively tried bolstering ties for economic interests.

Still, since his first trip to the country roughly 3 1/2 decades ago, Walz has, at times, made eyebrow-raising remarks for conservatives that are receiving fresh scrutiny — not unlike his liberal record as governor that Republicans have homed in on.

Although Walz has long advocated improving U.S.-China relations, he has also been critical of human rights abuses and the Chinese government while showing affection for its people. He told a Nebraska newspaper in 1990 that if China “had the proper leadership, there are no limits on what they could accomplish.”

Comer pressed the FBI to provide the desired materials no later than Aug. 30, although it’s not clear whether the agency plans to comply with the request. The Washington Examiner contacted a spokesperson for the FBI for comment.

Trump owes more than $100 million from New York legal troubles

New financial reports reveal former President Donald Trump still owes millions from his legal troubles in New York

His latest financial disclosure report released Thursday revealed he owes $100 million in liabilities from his settlement with journalist E. Jean Carroll and his New York civil fraud case. This disclosure is the first peek into the former president’s finances ahead of the November election

Trump owes between $1,000,001 and $5 million in liabilities to Carroll for her first civil lawsuit against him. Trump lost that suit in May 2023 when a jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. In that case, Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $5 million.

For Carroll’s second civil lawsuit against the former president, Trump still owes her $50 million. Earlier this year, a jury found Trump guilty of defaming Carroll and awarded her $83.3 million. In that suit, Carroll said Trump ruined her writing career and harmed her professionally.

Trump also owes $50 million in liabilities to the state of New York after he was found guilty of conspiring to manipulate his net worth. He was ordered to pay more than $350 million in penalties plus $100 million in prejudgment interest. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought on the case, was listed as a “creditor” in his financial disclosure.

In April, Trump posted a $175 million bond in the case after a New York appeals court reduced the $454 million bond payment that was originally required. The payment helped him avoid having his assets, including Trump Tower in Manhattan, seized.

Trump has never publicly revealed his entire net worth but has described himself as a “billionaire.”

According to the financial disclosure, the largest segment of Trump’s wealth is his ownership share of Trump Media & Technology Group, which is the parent company of Truth Social. Trump reported owning nearly 115 million shares of the company’s common stock, which is estimated to be $2.7 billion.

One of Trump’s largest sources of income is from his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, where he reported making about $57 million in income from the club. This figure is down from the $65 million reported in the disclosure last year.

House GOP on growing majority post-Harris entrance: ‘Ominous’

House Republicans sounded the alarm on their chances to expand their majority in the lower chamber as they seek to rev up conservatives and ward off Vice President Kamala Harris’s momentum.

Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC), who heads the House GOP’s campaign arm, told his colleagues that “the Democrats are at the gates,” according to Punchbowl News.

Democrats only need to gain four seats to capture the majority in the House this November. Hudson is the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which last month announced that its $37 million fundraising haul was the largest amount ever recorded in the second quarter of an election year.

His comments came as key Republican members from the lower chamber gathered for a conference call Thursday evening. Echoing Hudson’s warning was the lower chamber’s top Republican.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said his party is facing an “ominous” political landscape as many Republicans were caught off-guard by Harris’s sudden ascension to the top of the Democratic ticket.

Harris is shrinking former President Donald Trump’s lead in several battleground states where Republican congressional candidates are in tight races.

In Michigan, former Republican state Sen. Tom Barrett is facing off against Democrat Curtis Hertel Jr. However, with Harris up by 3 percentage points in Michigan, according to some polls, Democratic momentum could shore up support for Hertel.

“We’re at a point where you have to be pretty different from your own party’s presidential candidate to distinguish the voters,” Matt Grossman, the director of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at Michigan State University, told WKAR Public Media earlier this year. “Most people who vote for a Republican president are going to vote Republican for Congress and the same on the Democratic side.”

Michigan’s 8th Congressional District is also up for grabs as Democratic state Sen. Kristen McDonald Rivet and Republican Paul Junge fight to succeed Rep. Dan. Kildee (D-MI). The Cook Political Report rates their race a toss-up.

Harris is also leading Trump in Virginia, a state where the GOP leader once held a slight edge over President Joe Biden. Trump-endorsed Derrick Anderson and Democratic candidate Yevgeny “Eugene” Vindman, both Army veterans, are vying to replace retiring Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) in Virginia’s 7th District. Vindman served in the Trump administration until he was booted for testifying about a 2019 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“I think the RNC is going to look at the 7th as the most likely pick-up in Virginia,” political analyst Bob Holsworth told the Hill last month. “I expect this to be heavily competitive, I expect a lot of money to be raised, and it’s crucial for the Democrats if they’re going to take the House to hold on to this seat.”

Johnson and Hudson agreed that fundraising was critical during the House Republican Conference call on Thursday.

“But the Democrats are … hauling in hundreds of millions of dollars in the last few weeks. If we’re going to accomplish our goal of growing our majority, I need you to want it,” Hudson told his colleagues as the NRCC leader seeks to expand the Republican footprint in Congress.

Johnson said he plans to transfer $4 million to the NRCC. House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) announced she also would transfer $2 million to the House GOP’s campaign arm, the New York GOP, and other candidates.

“We still have a great shot to grow our majority,” Hudson encouraged his colleagues.

Judge orders ATF to return last ‘legal’ bump stock

The last “legal” bump stock is set to be given back to the owner this month after the Biden administration lost on its latest gun control effort.

A federal district court judge, reacting to a Supreme Court decision knocking down a ban on the device from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, ordered it returned to Clark Aposhian, the Utah resident who took on the agency and won.

Sheng Li, the litigation counsel for New Civil Liberties Alliance, which brought the case for Aposhian, said their client voluntarily gave his bump stock up to ATF with the stipulation that he would get it back if he won the case to overturn the ban.

That technically means it is the last “legal” device in America since ATF had required others to be destroyed or surrendered.

He plans to go to ATF’s office in Salt Lake City and retrieve it this month.

“This is kind of symbolic,” Li said.

They won their case when the Supreme Court agreed that federal agencies can’t make up laws and rules that Congress should write. The case has implications for other gun control actions by President Joe Biden’s ATF, such as the ban on “pistol braces” on AR-style rifles.

“If self-government means anything, it must mean that only our elected officials can write criminal laws. Mr. Aposhian’s original appeal to the 10th Circuit, and his subsequent trip to the Supreme Court, illustrated the multiple problems with Chevron deference, and his case likely helped convince the justices that doctrine needed to die, even though they denied certiorari. But the main takeaway from Mr. Aposhian’s willingness to take a stand for his civil liberties is that bureaucrats at the ATF and other federal agencies are not empowered to write or reinterpret rules that take away more freedom. That’s why this is a glorious victory for all liberty-loving people,” said Mark Chenoweth, president of NCLA.

Trump taps oldest sons and major donors to lead presidential transition team

Former President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled his presidential transition team, comprising major party donors and his two oldest sons to lead policy and personnel efforts in preparation for a possible return to the White House next year.

The team will be co-led by two of Trump’s top campaign donors: Linda McMahon, who previously served as the administrator of the Small Business Administration, and Howard Lutnick, chairman and CEO of the financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald. The team also includes Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Trump’s running mate, and his two eldest sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, as honorary chairmen.

“The 2024 GOP Platform to Make America Great Again is a forward-looking agenda that will deliver safety, prosperity and freedom for the American people,” the former president said in a statement. “My administration will deliver on these bold promises. We will restore strength, competence and common sense to the Oval Office. I have absolute confidence the Trump-Vance Administration will be ready to govern effectively on Day One.”

Establishing a transition team ahead of Election Day is standard practice for presidential campaigns as it allows candidates to organize and prepare should they win the election.

The decision to tap McMahon and Lutnick to lead the transition team likely stems from the fundraising work the two have done over the last several months to boost Trump’s reelection bid. Just this month, Lutnick hosted a fundraiser for the former president in the Hamptons.

Trump Jr.’s placement on the team comes as the former president’s eldest son has openly expressed his desire to choose appointees in a future Trump administration. He told supporters at the Republican National Convention last month that he wants “veto power” to overrule candidates he did not trust.

“I want to block the liars,” Trump Jr. told the crowd. “I want to block the guys that are, you know, pretending they’re with you. I just want to block the bad actors. I just want to be a block. That’s it.”
