Trump sets up head-to-head Harris comparison with rally venue decision

Former President Donald Trump is set to host a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, this week, visiting the same venue Vice President Kamala Harris did on Tuesday, as both campaigns try to make the case Georgia is in their court.

The Harris campaign filled Georgia State University’s Convocation Center with more than 10,000 attendees Tuesday night and featured Sens. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Raphael Warnock (D-GA), as well as rappers Quavo and Megan Thee Stallion. Harris’s candidacy in the wake of President Joe Biden exiting the race has created a renewed sense of hope among Democrats in the state.

This weekend, Trump’s campaign is expected to host a rally in the same venue. Hosting both campaign stops in the same venue gives both campaigns a moment to be compared in terms of optics and the number of people in attendance.

Georgia is one of several battleground states this election cycle. Harris is polling just 2 points below Trump, with Harris gaining 46% to Trump’s 48%, according to a recent Hill/Emerson College poll. It’s a state Biden narrowly flipped by a little more than 11,000 votes, marking the first time Georgia voted for a Democrat for president since 1992.

While Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) previously said he believed Georgia was not in play and would be red in November, he is warning Republicans to be cautiously optimistic about the state.

“I do not think Republicans need to be getting overconfident right now,” Kemp said during the Republican National Convention.

Democrats have a renewed sense of optimism in the Peach State with Harris presumably at the top of the ticket.

“I have not seen this much excitement amongst the Democratic base and Democratic coalition since Barack Obama,” Tharon Johnson, an Atlanta-based political strategist who has worked for Democratic candidates in the state, told the Wall Street Journal. “This is the most excitement we’ve felt in Georgia over the last decade.”

In recent elections, Democrats have held large advantages in Atlanta, as well as Columbus and Savannah, and some rural counties with majority-black populations. Republicans continue to dominate rural populations and small cities in the state.

Democrats have 24 campaign offices across the state, recently opening two in Atlanta. The Trump campaign recently opened its first office in Georgia.

“Some days I feel sorry for Republicans because they’ve got to figure out how to run a criminal against a prosecutor,” Warnock said during Harris’s campaign stop. “Kamala Harris is getting ready to prosecute the case. The American people are the jury, and we’re going to get the verdict right.”

More to be done to embrace, drive innovation economy: Report

(The Center Square) – Although North Carolina’s economy is doing well and keeping pace with the rest of America, the state still needs to do more to “embrace and drive” innovation, according to a new report by the North Carolina Board of Science, Technology & Innovation.

“Technology and innovation are key ingredients of a high-productivity, high-employment, high-income, growing economy,” Janet Cowell, chairwoman of the board, said in a statement.

North Carolina plays a leading role in the “basic” and early-stage “applied” research for breakthrough innovations, the report said.

“But it also shows that we have room for improvement in scaling and converting those innovations to commercial uses and in ensuring that more sectors and regions of our state participate in and benefit from that activity,” said Cowell.

North Carolina ranks sixth nationally in the amount of money spent on academic research and development, according to the report. The state ranks 10th in business research and development. The education levels of adults in North Carolina has grown faster than the U.S. as a whole, “driven in part by a higher-than-average influx of college-educated adults,” the report states.

Although academic-related startup activity in North Carolina is higher than the national average, nonacademic venture capital and patents is still below average.

Spending on elementary and secondary public-school education also lags the national average as does broadband access.

“Faced with a dynamic and competitive economy, the best approach is to shape it rather than be shaped by it,” North Carolina Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders said in a statement. “We must continue to innovate – to create and adopt new products, services, and business models that add value and improve economic well-being.”

The report confirms that North Carolina’s capacity for innovation is stronger than ever, Sanders said.

“But it also shows where we must continue to improve to increase the level of prosperity throughout the state,” she said.

North Carolina needs better distribution of its growth throughout the state, the reported concluded. Nine of the state’s 100 counties – Wake, Mecklenburg, Guilford, Forsyth, Durham, Buncombe, New Hanover, Iredell and Orange – account for only 9% of the state’s land area but 42% of the state’s current population and 59% of the state’s population growth over the last 22 years, the report said.

“They hold 39% of the state’s manufacturing companies, 53% of the state’s companies, 49% of the state’s total income, 55% of its jobs, and 62% of its gross domestic product,” the reported states. “And in terms of the innovation economy, those nine counties represent even larger shares.”

Pierce County Council split on sheriff’s department being featured on ‘Cops’

(The Center Square) – The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department will be featured on the next season of the reality television show “Cops,” and county officials are split on whether or not this will help the department in its recruitment efforts.

KING 5 first reported on the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department being featured on the next season of the long-running show. The department told KING 5 that being on the show could help the department attract recruits.

Last December, Deputy Jeff Papen said that the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office is one of the lowest staffed departments in the country.

At that time, the county had 771 full-time employees related to public safety. The county’s law enforcement branch saw the number of positions drop from 414 FTEs in the 2022-2023 budget year to 402 set for the 2024-2025 budget year. For context, neighboring King County, Washington state’s most populated county, had 1,125 positions in its sheriff’s department at the same time.

The prospect of Pierce County deputies being on “Cops” has drawn mixed reactions from members of the Pierce County Council.

Council Chair Ryan Mello said he is skeptical that the show can help the county attract professionals needed to improve safety in the region and is instead a distraction.

“What the show ‘Cops’ does is take isolated incidents and creates a perception that this kind of violent crime is happening all across the county. It is not,” Mello told The Center Square in an email. “This takes away from all the work we are doing to make this a great place to do business, work and raise a family.”

Mello mentioned the county council’s previous work to compensate sheriff’s deputies and invest in recruitment and retention bonuses as better ways to recruit and retain deputies.

On the other side of the argument, Pierce County Councilmember Amy Cruver views the sheriff’s department’s presence on the show as “an ideal opportunity” to showcase what deputies deal with during a routine patrol.

Cruver said that the show is informative and that viewers can see the issues facing the county and come up with their own opinions and potential solutions based on what “Cops” showcases.

“Portraying reality is not exploiting those in a troubled season of life; it’s informative to the public,” Cruver emailed The Center Square. “Perhaps this kind of publicity will spur more ideas for dealing with dangerous or hazardous situations, validate the need to review current laws for ones that will better protect the public, hold the lawless accountable, and prioritize the need for effective services to address mental health concerns.”

The sheriff’s office did not respond to The Center Square’s request for comment by the time of publication.

Hamadeh leading Masters in race to succeed Lasko in congressional GOP primary thumbnail

Hamadeh leading Masters in race to succeed Lasko in congressional GOP primary

(The Center Square) – Abe Hamadeh, one of two Republican candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump, had a narrow lead in Arizona’s congressional District 8 Republican primary late Tuesday night.

If Hamadeh’s lead holds, his win would come only a few months after the Arizona Appeals court rejected his challenge to his loss in the 2022 race for attorney general against Democrat Kris Mayes. Hamadeh was also endorsed by the U.S. Senate GOP primary winner Kari Lake, another individual contesting her election loss to Gov. Katie Hobbs in 2022.

Just before midnight, the Secretary of State reported that Hamdeh was narrowly in the lead above venture capitalist Blake Masters, the other Republican candidate endorsed by Trump. The former president endorsed Masters on Saturday, days before the election and long after mail-in ballots had been sent out.

The latest results show Hamadeh received 30% of votes and Masters received 23% of votes. Arizona Speaker of the House Ben Toma is not far behind with 22.25% of the votes. Other Republican candidates included Trent Franks, 17.34%, Anthony Kern, 4.62% and Pat Briody, 2.57%.

Hamadeh is the former Maricopa County prosecutor and the son of immigrants. His priorities if elected to congress are allocating resources to end illegal border crossings and crime at the border, passing a bill that classifies drug cartels as terrorist organizations and ensuring election integrity.

Hamadeh stands by his challenge to his 2022 election loss.

“America cannot exist without free and fair elections,” reads Hamadeh’s campaign website. “What we witnessed in the 2020 and 2022 elections should never happen again and there must be accountability. I am still fighting for those that were disenfranchised last November in court and will never waver in fighting for the integrity of our elections.”

Additionally, Hamadeh plans to work to lower inflation and the cost of living in addition to lowering abortion rates and providing pro-life resources to mothers.

The winner of the GOP primary will be going against Democratic candidate and Biosecurity Expert Gregory Whitten, though the heavily-Republican district is likely to carry tonight’s winner through the general election in November.

“At the Pentagon Greg served as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Defense Programs,” reads Whitten’s campaign website.

Whitten’s priorities include ensuring economic security for Arizonans, solving Arizona water challenges, ensuring that women have the freedom to make reproductive decisions without influence from the government and creating border security at the southern border without building a wall.

“The choice couldn’t be clearer for #CD08,” reads a post by Whitten on X, referring to the Republican candidates. “They don’t care about those in the district. They follow a convicted felon who’s stated that he’d be a dictator from day 1.”

If results hold, Hamadeh and Whitten will be competing for the District 8 seat in the general election Nov. 5.

I am still fighting for those that were disenfranchised last November in court and will never waver in fighting for the integrity of our elections.” Additionally, Hamadeh plans to work to lower inflation and the cost of living in addition to lowering abortion rates and providing pro-life resources to mothers. They follow a convicted felon who’s stated that he’d be a dictator from day 1.” If results hold, Hamadeh and Whitten will be competing for the District 8 seat in the general election Nov. 5., , Hamadeh leading Masters in race to succeed Lasko in congressional GOP primary, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/AP24211597969676-scaled-1024×683.webp, Washington Examiner, Political News and Conservative Analysis About Congress, the President, and the Federal Government, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/cropped-favicon-32×32.png, https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/feed/, Madeline Armstrong | The Center Square,
